Lockers at Train Station for Rothenburg ob der Tauber

Are there lockers at the Steinanch Train Station for visiting Rothenburg ob der Tauber? We are doing a stopover from Munich on our way to Nuremburg for the night. If not any lockers, suggestion on what to do with our luggage while we tour around for 5 hours?

According to this website, there are no lockers (Schließfächer) at the Steinach Bahnhof.

Similarly, this website does not show lockers at the Rothenburg Bahnhof.

I think most trains that stop at Steinach (bei Rothenburg) will also stop at Ansbach. That page says that there are lockers at the Ansbach station, but the map does not show their location, so I'm not sure.

Of course, you could also go to Würzburg, where there are lockers, and come back to Steinach.

You should take a look at the rail scheduling for the specific TRAVEL DATE you have in mind to see what might work best for you.

The ANSBACH idea: Might work... If the itinerary you are looking at has a scheduled layover in Ansbach - or a layover you can manipulate by specifying a stopover there during your Munich > Rothenburg trip - then perhaps you could arrange to stow bags there if said layover is long enough to get your bags into a locker and make your next train - and if you can determine that lockers exist there in the first place. Then later, when you head to Nuremberg near the end of the day, you will need a second longish layover. (Right now, this sounds to me like a lot of ifs.)

What about just routing yourself through Nuremberg in the first place and dropping your bags there? We know N'berg station has lockers. And instead of TWO layovers, you will need just ONE layover for luggage-fumbling with this strategy. Lacking your travel date, I checked the DB site for Wed 11/8 as an example. And I made the assumption you might want to leave Munich after 9 am, probably using an inexpensive Bayern ticket (still €36/2, I think, to cover all your trains this day.)

Results:

9:04 - 12:51 for Munich > Nuremberg (specify a stopover in N'berg with 00:00 stopover time) > Rothenburg

This stopover strategy re-routes your journey and gives you a 31-minute stopover in Nuremberg, enough time to stow bags.

If you do as originally planned - Munich > Rothenburg with no mention of Nuremberg in between - the DB site provides a default itinerary on a slightly faster route with a departure time of 9:35 and changes of train in Treuchtlingen and Steinach, with the exact same arrival time in Rothenburg as this alternative schedule WITH the N'berg stopover - 12:51.

So if your travel date were this coming Wednesday, all you'd have to do is leave Munich 31 minutes earlier at 9:04. Maybe your date will work the same way.

Return train to Nuremberg after 5 hours: 18:05 - 19:20 Rothenburg > Nuremberg

There are later trains as well at 19:05, 20:05, 22:05.

You can also use an app like Stashr or NannyBag which will provide you another option for where to leave your bags for a fee (usually a local business that has agreed to take bags).

I was able to store a bag (no charge) at the Triberg tourist office a few years ago when all the lockers at the train station were taken. I don't know if you get the same treatment at the Rothenburg Tourist Office (ground floor of the Rathaus), but maybe an email will confirm.

I don't see any locations at Nannybag.

On 12/11, your train sequence will be as I outlined above if you use the 9:04 departure. There are probably other options as well. Be sure to specify "only local transport" to find correct schedules at DB if traveling with the "Bayern Ticket". Other schedules which include long-distance trains (click off "only local transport") might work well too with a Nuremberg stopover

9:04 Munich > Ingolstadt Hbf (ar platform 7; 17 min. layover)
10:08 Ingolstadt Hbf (lv platform 2) > Nuremberg (31 min. layover; stow bags.)
11:21 Nuremberg > Ansbach (9-min. layover)
12:11 Ansbach > Steinach (4 min. layover)
12:36 Steinach > Rothenburg (12:50.)

(Some platform numbers are not yet announced - check later, with the understanding that they can change last minute; departure signs at the stations should show updates.)

Nuremberg Hbf offers over 600 lockers:

Lots of lockers in the basement area next to "Lebensmittel" (groceries.) Some near the tracks as well (see red area, upper right corner of the map.)

Sounds to me you might want to review Rick's excellent advice on packing, which will improve not just this rail journey but your others as well.
