Would we have time to visit Linderhof before the Play starts at 1:30 (Sept 25)? I know we need to get there an hour early. We have a rental house and I will ask if we can park there early. I have heard that we should plan on 3 hours at Linderhof, and if the earliest tour is at 9:05, that might be cutting it short?
One of the things that I really enjoyed at Linderhof was the Grotto, which was built to enjoy the music of Richard Wagner. However, I think that I remember reading recently that the Grotto was closed for repairs. If that's the case, I imagine that the time you would spend would be somewhere between 30 minutes to 1 hour less. I'm not sure, but maybe that eases your time constraints? The website says the Grotto will be closed into 2024.
The remainder of the palace was absolutely stunning, and I enjoyed it much more than I did Neuschwanstein or Hohenschwangau.
If it is possible, in Oberammergau, try and go to the information event that they hold each morning at 10 or 10:30. It is free, lasts about 30 min. It makes the play so much more meaningful. Take some time to walk around Oberammergau, go inside the church, see the cemetery that surrounds it, find your restaurant where you will be having dinner, buy your Passion Play book so you can follow along in English. Leave Linderhof for the next day.
That is good information. We for sure want to walk around Oberammergau! So, maybe it's best to get straight there!
Is the informational meeting in English?
We were just in Oberammergau 2 weeks ago. We rode e-bikes to Linderhoff, toured outside the castle (which is by far the most beautiful part), ate a picnic snack on the benches beside the fountain, then rode back to Oberammergau by 11:00. Great fun, beat the crowds and the heat. Would (and probably will) do it again in a heartbeat.
Yes, the info event is in English. They do one in German at a different time.
