Limburg an der Lahn or ??

We have visited Bayern and Baden-Württemberg several times in recent years. We are thinking of starting in Hessen this coming April. We plan to visit Marburg as our 2nd stop. I am looking for one other place that is easy to reach by train from the Frankfurt airport and handy for the following ride to Marburg. Limburg looks interesting (half-timber houses and the cathedral) and has a Karstadt - good for stocking up on toiletries, etc. We are thinking of two nights. We are always wasted the first day and just wander about while we get over jet-lag. Is there another, better suggestion? Thanks, Gary

I like Limburg a lot, as well as Marburg. I think you will really enjoy your time there. I don't have the events yet for spring time, but you can also check the city website to see what is happening then.

Have you ever seen the middle Rhine? Or will you be there later in your trip. It's something, in my opinion, not to be missed.

If you stay in Bacharach, Koblenz is only 30-40 minutes away and they have a Karstadt. From there you could get to the Marksburg, in Braubach, the only intact castle on the Rhine, in only 12 minutes. St. Goar is also only 10 min away be train. If you stay in Boppard, Koblenz is only 17 minutes away.

I admit to never having stopped in Limburg, but it's the most striking town to drive by on A3 between Frankfurt and Köln. The impressive cathedral sits on top of a hill and is visible for miles.

Limburg, unfortunately, is most famous recently for the extravagant renovation of the bishop's palace, under the former prelate dubbed by the press The Bishop of Bling.

Thanks Jo. I know that you are very familiar with this area and appreciate your vote of confidence. I have been to the Limburg's website and will revisit it before we go in April.

Thanks Lee. We stayed 6 nights on the Rhein in May, 2009 in St. Goar, Bacharach and Mainz. It is a wonderful area. I was stationed "in der Pfalz" in the 1970's. We are going in April this time, a touch early for many hotels on the Rhein.

Thanks Tom. I have looked at the great pictures of the town with the view that you noted. I have also read about excessive spending on the bishop's residence in my web searches.

OK, Gary, but you only said you had been to Bavaria and Baden-Württemburg, not Rheinland-Pfalz, so I didn't know you'd already been to the Rhein.

Lee. Unless I am confusing you with someone else, I believe that I stayed at the Königshof in Mainz and Malerswinkel in Bacharach on your recommendation. It has been a few years.
