My family of 8 will be in the Bavarian Alps the end of July for 3 days. We have a tween, 2 teens, and 3 in early 20s along with my husband and I. We want to hike, see the beauty of the area, and go to Neuschwanstein. Which area, Lermoos, Garmisch, or Mittenwald, would you recommend for this with our age of kids? Or is there another area you would recommend over those 3? We have been to Murren, Switzerland and would love to find an area as picturesque with as many hiking and activity options for our kids. Thank you!
Would you like to walk through a verrrry narrow gorge with water and river blasting through? Might be refreshing in July.
Oh, are one of the areas not accessible because of a gorge at that time of year?
No, Nigel is talking about Partnach Gorge a beautiful hike in Garmisch-Partenkirchen (will be abbreviated GP from here on). We stayed a week in GP and never ran out of things to do. Hiking, biking, summer luge, train ride/gondola up the Zugspitze, boating on nearby lakes, day trips to interesting sites close by. There are a large number of apartments for rent on Home Away.
There many’s shops and restaurants as well.
I haven’t stayed in the other towns you mention, but I can see GP working quite well for your family.
That's the one.
As long as no child is the type to try to get outside the chains saving you falling in it is great fun. If any of you are tall, mind your head. I wore a cap to keep the dripping water off my head and out of my eyes. My wife is vision impaired so I used my phone to light the way in the tunnels.... Use the toilet before you start the walk up to the gorge.
Oooh! That gorge sounds fun! We will have to go. Thank you for the clarification Carol and for letting me know about your experience in GP.
Between Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Mittenwald, I would prefer Mittenwald. I've spent time in both. I didn't really like GaPa; much to big and lacking in charm. It might have the Partnach Klamm, but the town itself does not appeal to me. I might stay in Mittenwald and go to GaPa one day for the Klamm. Mittenwald, though, is a little longer trip to Füssen.
There are two klamms right outside Mittenwald. The closest one, Leutaschklamm, is a 2 km hike from the Mittenwald Bahnhof.
I've never been in Lermoss, only past it in the train, but it is a pretty area. And, if you take the bus to Füssen from Reutte, it is the closest to Neuschwanstein. Looking at the pictures on Google Maps, I think I would also prefer it to GaPa. You could also stay in Lermoos and visit Partnach Klamm as a day trip.
The Austrian cable car to the Zugspitze is at Ehrwald, the next train station from Lermoos toward GaPa.
Lee, thanks for your recommendations. We decided to see Neuschwanstein on our way to this area, so proximity to Neuschwanstein is a moot point now. Sounds like Mittenwald might be our place!
I would agree with Carol, especially with a family. GaP has more options for activities and food vs Mittenwald. You can't really lose either way.
I agree with Lee. I’d stay in Mittenwald over GP. We stayed in Mittenwald twice. Love it.
