Leipzig to Eisenach train problem; rent car?

In early Sept we hope to train from Berlin, stop a few hours in Wittenberg, and sleep that night in Eisenach to tour Eisenach the following day. Bahn.de site says there is track construction between Leipzig and Eisenach, so they will post adjusted schedule by today, July 1. No change listed today; still a warning about construction and uncertain schedule. I am considering instead training Berling-Wittenberg-Leipzig, staying that night in Leipzig, and making a day trip to Eisenach either by train (if the schedule with the construction issue eventually looks reasonable) or by rental car. Does it make sense to drive from Leipzig to Eisenach if the train schedule becomes unworkable? We'd hate to miss Eisenach.

Hi,

Take the train from Leipzig to Eisenach...most likely the train would be delayed but train delays are no way as bad ie, long as those of last year. I found the delays , if any, were minimum in contrast to what I saw and heard last year.

Eisenach is a really easy day trip from Leipzig if you decide to drive it. It's not too far, the roads are excellent, and everything is clearly marked. See the Wartburg for sure... It's quite impressive!

Well before the date of travel, they will probably update the schedule to include an SEV (Schienen Ersatz Verkehr, substitute bus transport) around the construction area. In my experience, all trains on the schedule will continue to run, with only a slight change in timing to account for the substitute bus. These buses will be waiting outside the station and will take you to the next station beyond the construction area. Often, depending on the type of work they are doing, they will stop work to allow a few priority trains (usually ICE/IC/EC) to pass through, so check the whole schedule for that day.
