Leipzig to Munich, including southern CR

With about a week available, my husband and I will be departing Leipzig early by rental car on April 2nd, would like to see Colditz, Coburg, and Bayreuth, then head down to stay in Bamburg (April 3rd).

Nuremburg (April 4th) to do the walking tour & are considering crossing into CR to see a couple of towns in the south (April 5th).
Drive to B-Gaden (weather-permitting), picking up the Alpine Highway and following it over the next few days before ending up at Dachau on April 9th.
Munich (April 10 & 11) - booked on walking tours and BMW tour. Depart midday on April 12th.

We may detour to Neuburg am Rhein (border of France/Germany - tiny town with a 13 Century castle), a little farther west than we'd originally planned, as I've just discovered this is where my great-grandmother came from.

Would greatly appreciate your advice on our tentative schedule.

April 4th: That's going to be a big and time consuming detour. I'd rather go from Leizig via Plauen into NW CR and visit Cheb (lovely), Karlovy Vary and Mariánske Lazne. From Cheb return into Bavaria (Bayreuth).

a little farther west

Like 550 km and 7 hours drive from Berchtesgaden to Neuenburg am Rhein, and that is using the Autobahn, not the Deutsche Alpenstrasse. It seems to me to be a 2 or 3 day detour.

What towns in the CR south? Have you used viamichelin to to see what the driving times are to all these places? Be sure to pick a Czech vignette, and an Austrian one if you venture there on the way to Berchtesgaden.

Ceske Budejovice & Cesky Krumlov

Because we do have a few days, we thought going on the AH would be 'do-able'. . . . it really doesn't leave us time to explore.

Coburg, and Bayreuth, then head down to stay in Bamburg (April 3rd).

On the same day? Let's see: the Colditz tours will start after 9am, and you will probably leave the town after 12am. It takes 2 hours to Bayreuth, and you will need at least three hours to see the town. You will leave Bayreuth well after 5pm and arrive one hour later in Coburg. The castle and all other sights will already be closed.
It's also a bit strange that you want to see Bayreuth, the town of Wagner, but not Leipzig, the city were Bach lived.

This is a huge detour. IF you want to visit the CR it makes much more sense to see the Spa Triange in the northwest of the country. Karlovy Vary and Marianske Lazne are very beautiful spa towns, and Cheb and Loket two interesting historic towns. Loket is very picturesque btw..

Hi,

On getting to Colditz: Outside of Leipzig Hbf is the bus depot, on the left as you step out of the train station. One of those buses goes to Colditz. .
