Was wondering if anyone Has recommendations for lodging in Leipzig will be there two night mid dec with car as we travel to Innsbruck. Looks like we will be able to hear the Boys choir in Leipzig at the Thomaskirche while we r there which is very exciting
I stayed in the Steigenberger hotel last year. As you might expect it is very nice and also in a very central location. I rarely stay in such a fancy place, but was impressed.
thanks so much for sharing! BTW anything in particular you enjoyed seeing in Leipzig?
If you are interested in the Thomanerchor you might be interest in other aspects of classical music in Leipzig. You could, e.g., follow the Leipzig Music Trail (Leipziger Notenspur) or visit the museum of historical musical instruments.
Leipzig is known for music. The Thomaskirche is where Bach is now buried (he was moved there recently). The Leipzig Gewandhaus is the home of the Symphony. We did not see a concert in June, but the house was very nice. And of course, Leipzig is the site of the Memorial to the Battle of All Nations, where Napoleon's attempt to go and capture Berlin was stopped. The Memorial is amazing - very massive. The history museum, which has a wonderful diorama of the battle in the village, is interesting. Unless you are a scholar of the Napoleonic Wars, you will learn a lot and find it interesting. If you are not interested in history or that period, it will be less interesting. Not sure about mid-Dec, as the top of the Memorial is quite exposed and might be chilly. Since we are cheap, we stayed in a hostel (private room) which was 40 E and quite acceptable.
For a cheaper but still good place I liked the Days Inn City Centre - despite the name it's in a refurbished DDR tower block about ten minutes out of the centre by tram or 15-20 on foot. There's a very nice nearby restaurant called Zunftkeller.
