Leave rental car to go to salzburg?

We will have a rental car and want to go to Salzburg for a day from Berchsgaden. We are looking for a good place to be able to leave our car still in Germany and then get easily into the old town via train or bus.
Reason being...to drive into austria for one day we would need to pay a cross border fee with car rental, buy a vignette and get an international driver's license ....so just not very cost effective for one day.
I know there is a bus from Berchesgsden but the return times are too early...would like to experience Salzburg in the evening and have dinner there.
So hoping someone has knowledge of where we can drive as close as possible still within Germany, park our car and get in and out of the old Town of Salzburg easily. Thanks

There are four trains from Salzburg to Berchtesgaden between 7pm and 11pm (with a transfer in Freilassing). Otherwise, the stations along the Berchtesgaden-Freilassing line have P&R lots; Freilassing has 260 spaces, but you may want to try it at the less frequented station of Hammerau (1 stop before Freilassing, 65 spaces according to the Bavarian Station Date Base; search for the line starting with "Parken am Bahnhof").

There are also trains, Berchtesgaden is part of the Salzburg S-Bahn network. Last departure from Salzburg to Berchtesgaden a random date in April is 22:29, does that leave you enough time for dinner?

Salzburg is very walkable, so you won't need a car once you get downtown. The train will drop you a fairly good walk (as I recall, maybe a mile or a little more) to the old center you want to see. I've only driven there once and parked at my hostel for our time there. If the train doesn't work, I'm sure there are car parks available close to the old center.
