I have a 9 hr layover traveling from the US to Namibia on 05/23. What is the best way to get into the city and the best way to see as much as possible of the city with food experiences included.
Hello,
Here's a post that may help: https://www.going.com/guides/the-layover-guide-to-munich.
Have a great trip.
- Let's see how much time you have:
(a) Assuming your luggage is checked through to the US and you don't have to wait at the baggage carousel, you can make it to the S-Bahn (MUC Airport Center, signposted simply as "Z") in 30-40 minutes including immgiration. If you want to drop off your carry on, add 15 minutes, because you have to find the spot first.
(b) Travel time to Marienplatz is approximately 45 minutes. There are two lines, the S8 and S1. Don't be confused by the listed final destinations: trains go beyond Marienplatz. Get an Airport Day Ticket (also available for groups) and download the MVV app to find your way around. Wi-Fi is available on the S-Bahn, and in the city you can always find places where it's available, such as department stores.
(c) Return journey: Remember that for flights to the US Munich Airport's official recommendation is to arrive three hours before departure; two hours is the absolute minimum for safety reasons. This means you'll need to leave the center approximately three hours before departure at the latest.
All in all: 1:30 to 2 hours from landing to the city center, three hours from the city center to the gate: you have am maximum of 4 to 4.5 hours in Munich.
What to do in the city center? Download one of the walking tours available online for Munich's city center (I think RS has one too). Or create your own from the Munich Tourist Office website: https://www.muenchen.de/en/sights/sightseeing-20-top-sights-and-attractions-munich.
Food: If the weather is nice, go to a beer garden. If you're already in the English Garden, maybe the one by the Chinese Tower. Otherwise, go to one a little further away from the center (using public transport included in your day ticket), like the Flaucher beer garden or the Hofbräukeller on Wiener Platz (much cozier than the overcrowded Hofbräuhaus or the - on this forum much-praised - Augstinerkeller). If it's just about tasting local food, avoid the big beer halls (it's mediocre there), with the exception of the Spatenhaus on Max-Joseph-Platz (a bit pricey) and the Schneider Weißbierbräuhaus in Tal 7 st..
