Lauscha and Fussen

We are planning to visit Lauscha to visit the glass blowing shops and also Fussen to explore Neuschwanstein castle and surrounding area. We have 4 nights. We're not sure there is much else to do in Lauscha than the glass blowing, so are thinking about spending one night there and the other 3 in Fussen area. Is that a good idea, or should we split it 2 and 2? Is the Lauscha area interesting enough to spend 2 nights?

Lauscha is very small, and a bit “off the main track.” The drive there is all rolling hills, and not much else. The stop to see the glass blowing places, where so many Christmas ornaments come from, was absolutely worth it for me, but I didn’t even stay there overnight…. I drove on to Leipzig.
If you have a car, and some flexibility to see other things in the general area, I would recommend a stop at Vierzehnheiligen SE of Coburg, or perhaps going as far north as Erfurt or Eisenach to visit the Wartburg.

Thank you so much! That helps greatly with my decision. I think we will stay there one night and head to Fussen for the other 3 nights, as I know there is much beauty there to explore.

I never knew Lauscha existed and I 've lived here for 20 years. It's on my "To Do" list. Was thinking of a few nights visiting the Coburger Weihnachtsmarkt this year. Lauscha is not far. Been too nearby Sonneberg famous for Dolls.

You should search these Forum for Füssen and the surrounding areas. Lots of good info.

The glass museum in Lauscha is worth a stop. It's not terribly large, so it won't take too long to see it. I guess I should warn you that the shop was selling machine-made marbles from Mexico without any signage that I could see. Attractive, but not souvenirs of southeastern Germany's glass industry.

Glass Museum website

It would be smart to try to find some information online about the opening hours of glass shops in the area. I was in Lauscha on a Saturday in late July 2015. The glass museum was open, but I think I recall at least one shop that was not. That was sort of unexpected, because you'd think folks from that part of Germany might be taking local trips on a weekend. I'd wonder about Sunday, obviously, and also Monday, since places catering to weekend visitors sometimes take Monday off.
