I'm trying to find one near HBF to use during our trip as Berlin is our halfway point. Some of what I am finding is old information and I know they can close. Does anyone know if there is one close to it?
Google Maps is not showing me one in that area. Rick's guidebook does list a few near his recommended hotels. Eco-Express Waschsalon and Schnell & Sauber Waschcenter are two chain options.
Don't see any. Are you staying at a hotel near the Hauptbahnhof? There are many more desirable neighborhoods to stay in Berlin than the Hbf area. Not dangerous, just there is nothing else there, including laundromats.
Thanks Laura! Yes Sam we are staying in the area. We found a great deal on a hotel two months ago and will be coming via train from Copenhagen so my husband wanted to give it a try.
For the first 4 or 5 trips to Europe I made with carryon only, I searched high and low for laundomats. Sometimes I tried to find them on the Internet before I left, other times I just searched in the neighborhood when I was there. I almost never found any. Finally I gave up trying. Now I just wash out a few things each night. For me that works better than trying to find a laundomat for a big load. The nice thing about this approach is that I only need about 3 changes of clothing, so the weight I carry is greatly reduced.
Hi,
At Berlin Hbf to the right as you exit ( ca 2 mins) is the Meininger Hotel/Hostel big tall building, which would have laundry facilities. Another hostel I know that has laundry facilities is Wombats beyond Alexanderplatz. By the time I get to Berlin on a trip, usually timed this way, I have a good size bag of laundry, which the Pension does for its guests for 4 Euro.
There used to be a Schnell und Sauber (one of the chains mentioned above) close to Sanvignyplatz in Berlin ten years ago on Leibnitzstrasse and Kantstrasse. It's gone, replaced by a food market.
You might try asking the desk staff at your hotel about nearby laundromats when you check in. That method has worked well for me on many occasions, including last September in Vienna.
Along the lines of what @Lee said, I do the same -- though it requires traveling with lightweight, washable clothing, rather than, say, jeans or heavy cottons. I use a drybag, which rolls up very small, and bring dry laundry flakes from Sea to Summit. Fill the drybag with water, pop in one or two soap flakes, add clothes, shake, let sit for a few minutes, rinse, squeeze dry with a towel, and hang overnight.
It is an option, though I could see that a one-time visit to a laundromat may be preferable.
Thanks everyone! I'm sending an email to our hotel this morning about it. I don't mind doing some of it in the sink when necessary, done that many times the past few trips but there are 4 of us and if I can do it in a laundromat that would be better. Plus its usually the quiet time I enjoy while hubby and father-in-law take our daughter to a park or something while I do the laundry :)
