Latest tour time for Neuschwanstein?

We will be driving from Munich and would like to see the Neuschwanstein Castle at the end of the day so that we will have time to take in some other sights along the way like the Wieskirche (open for visits from 12-2pm).

I see on the web site that the castle closes at 5:30pm in the summer but I am not sure if that means that there is a tour at 5:30pm or if all of the tours are done by 5:30pm - does anyone know?

We would like to time it so that we can shuttle up to Mary's Bridge and take some pics before touring the castle and then we would like to take the horse carriage down afterwards. Not sure if the carriages run after 5:30pm either?

We also know that we have to pick up the tickets at the ticket center no later than 1 hour before our tour time.

Does anyone have suggestions on what is the latest tour that we can book? We will be staying in Fussen afterwards so we are not worried about driving back to Munich late.

Thanks for any advice,
Cindy

I believe the ticket center closes at 5:30, so you should be able to go in after. Sorry, I know that did not help answer your question. I was wondering if you reserved tickets because going that late in the day it is unlikely that you will get a ticket. It will be so crowed that a reservation is a must. If/when you reserve your ticket you will find out for sure if you can be admitted after 5:30. However, if your sleeping in Fussen you could arrive at the castle at 8 A.M. when it opens. Most of the people arriving for a day trip usually do not arrive until after 9 or 10 in the morning. So it is possible to get in early without reservations. At least that is how it was for me 8 years ago when I went last, things might be different now. Maybe someone who has been in Fussen recently might be able to comment on the queue at 8 A.M. Either way it will not hurt to reserve a ticket. I wish you the best. Safe travels to you.

It was so silly of me. I have Rick's new guide book because I am going back this July. I should of looked there to begin with. I states that "the first castle tour of the day departs an hour after the ticket office opens and the last departs 30 minutes after it closes" hope that helps.

That area is very small, especially the parking area. Will it be possible to stay in Fussen and go back to Neuschwanstein first thing the next day?? The queue alone for the tickets was long, and waiting for the trolley/ bus to the castle took time, as they take turns going up and down.

Being that it will be crowded, you probably won't get the best shot off Mary's bridge. Its narrow and people hog up the bridge.

That's my 2 cents, if you can get there early the next day instead.

Thanks for all of the advice so far. I was asking for times so that I could book ahead online. I figure we will be able to make it to Wieskirche by about 1-1:30pm range and then we will probably want to get some lunch before heading to Neuschwanstein. I think if I schedule for 5pm then I should be able to make it by 4pm to the ticket window..

I had read somewhere that the view from Mary's bridge in the early morning is usually foggy so that's why I prefer to go in the late afternoon.
