Late January trip to Germany

We will be arriving in Frankfurt on January 27. We have 5-6 days. Any ideas of sights open/closed at this time of year? We are trying to focus on the Rhine/Mosel region. We are travelling by train. Any suggestions?

Many of the streets in the smaller towns are rolled up for the winter. Not literally, but they're just too quiet. You could safely plan on a visit to Mainz, Trier, Koblenz, Rüdesheim, and on a visit to Marksburg Castle in Braubach. Reichsburg in Cochem is open W, Sa and Su from 11 to 1500 hrs. with English tours at 1400.

Trains of course run at all hours. You can stop at any of the towns you like between Bingen or Ruedesheim and Koblenz, or on the Mosel route, for a look around.

You could stop at Eltville which is one of the most charming towns on the Rhine, chock full of half-timbered buildings, winding cobble stone streets, a castle tower, wall, and dry moat, lots of wineries, ancient church and it doesn't seem as quiet as most of the other towns on the Rhine. While there, take the bus up to Eberbach Monastery, with a very impressive 1000-year-old basilica and one of the best vineyards in the Rheingau.

Other pretty towns nearby but that are not on the Rhein would be Marburg (a university town) and Limburg. Neither one will be dead.

Limburg is nice. We spent 3 days there last fall.
