Last Day

Greetings to all you helpful people...

I am planning our last almost full day in Germany and am torn, looking for some guidance. We wake that morning in Heidelberg. Our flight home departs at 17:15 from Frankfurt. Not a lot of time, I know. I would like to make the best of it though.

My quandary is between heading to Frankfurt and enjoying some sights there or finding some places between to visit en-route. I originally considered both Speyer and Worms but Speyer is in the wrong direction and I don't want to spend a lot of time on the train that last day. Worms is on the way and close to the airport it appears but I am not sure if that would be a better use of our time or seeing a bit of Frankfurt. Ms Jo, I'm sure you'll have some good advice here.

Also, how much time do I need to allow not only to get to the airport but the time it will take to pass through customs, security, etc.

Thanks to everyone for help with this as well as the numerous other questions I've put out on the forum - you have all been lifesavers!

Hi Ruth- are you traveling by train or car? If by train, I would suggest you spend a few more hours in Heidelberg and catch a train no later than 1 PM to the airport. Using a car gives you more options because you don't have to cart and store luggage. But you do have to allow an extra 30 minutes or more to gas the car up and return the car.

Have a great trip!!!

Going through security and passport control in Frankfurt can be a pain. I would allow 2 hours. To me, d’Gaulle in Paris and Frankfurt’s airport are the worst airports I’ve ever passed through. Personally, I would get as close to Frankfurt as possible for sightseeing. In case there are transportation or travel issues you could always take a cab to the airport.

I would spend time in Frankfurt of course. What time of year is your trip?
Sometimes the airport is packed, other times not. It is usually quite efficient but for a flight to the US, you usually want to plan on being there 3 hours ahead of time. If you are in Frankfurt, your train ride to the airport is only 11-17 min. depending on which station you are using.
You do not go through customs when leaving a country. Customs is to declare items when arriving. You only have security when leaving.

I would not consider Worms to be close to the airport, it is at least an hour away with probably either a change of train in Mainz or in Frankfurt.

For sights in Frankfurt, we need to know what you are interested in seeing.

Hi, thanks for the responses. This trip is in 3 weeks. We depart Frankfurt on September 19 at 17:15. And I do feel a bit more comfortable giving us closer to 3 hours to get through the airport.

We are both interested in history, architecture, churches, people watching and eating. I enjoy going through a beautiful church also (my husband may be “churched-out” by this time but if there is anything particularly unique, I could probably drag him to it. We’re not big shoppers. We do enjoy museums too but again, time is a factor and I guess I might want to see a bit more of Frankfurt and less of an inside of a museum.

Thanks for any suggestions - we’re seeing a lot of smaller towns, castles, monasteries and such throughout our 10 days, I think we might be ready for a big city by then!

My rule of thumb, on day of travel always be in departure city. There are so many things that could go wrong, trains get cancelled(it's happened) accident on road, etc. Do yourself and family a favor and get to Frankfurt and then explore some of Frankfurt.

Visit the Klein Markt Halle, the Judengasse Museum and the Jewish Holocaust Remembrance Wall, the Kaiserdom, the Karmeliter Cloister, Alte Nikolai, our new Alt Stadt with the Franconofurd archeology.

Can't meet up with you though, Ruth, as will be tramping my way along the Camino Frances.

Heather suggested "...on day of travel always be in departure city. There are so many things that could go wrong...". Agree completely!! Spend some time exploring Frankfurt.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions - especially Ms. Jo with the Frankfurt locations...and Heather, I do agree. I know we are waking up in Heidelberg but will head right to Frankfurt as soon as we have some breakfast...that will ease my husband’s stress too. He’s a bit more nervous about these things but its always to be safe...very excited about our day in Frankfurt now. Thanks again.
