Lake swimming and mountains in Bavaria- recommendations please

Hello folks,

We are looking to visit Germany in the summertime at some point and we would like to travel to a place like the Salzkammergut in Austria- beautiful swimming lakes surrounded by mountains. Can anyone give any recommendations of towns to base ourselves out of?

Many thanks.

There are several large lakes in the south of Germany. The largest is Lake Constance (the Bodensee in German). It is in the middle of southern Germany on the Swiss border. Mountains are not so high, but across the border in Switzerland there are many. Also, you are close enough to the Black Forest and Rhine Falls.

In the Munich area, there are several smaller lakes. None of the names come to mind. Suggest checking a map.

You might like the Herrenchiemsee Palace that is on an island in a lake, south of Munich.https://www.getyourguide.com/activity/munich-l26/the-royal-castle-of-herrenchiemsee-t1779?utm_force=0

Lake Tegersee might be a good choice for you. You don't need a car, there is free bus transport around the lake, and there's a train every hour to Munich. Many beautiful mountain hikes from easy to demanding, several cable cars in the region, and a large selection of hotels and holiday appts and restaurants.

Alternatives include lakes Schliersee and / or Spitzingsee (the latter a bit out of the way), Kochel-/Walchensee (beautiful and less touristy than Tegernsee), Staffelsee, and the well know larger lakes like Ammersee, Starnberger See, and Chiemsee.
