Lake Starnberg in September

We are considering staying in the Lake Starnberg area sometime in September. Advise would be appreciated on areas to see. We will have already spent time in Munich. Will we need a car? I know that the train is the way to go from Munich to Starnberg.

Sounds like a nice relaxing holiday!

As far as things to see, the lake's themselves are the main attractions as is Andechs. Hopefully you have found the tourism website for the regions already, http://www.sta5.de/. Take some time to ride the ferries around the lakes, rent bikes or go for a walk (this is what we've always did in Starnberg). There is decent bus service in the area for getting around (see this transport booklet https://web.lk-starnberg.de/docs/fahrplan_STA_2018.pdf) but you might consider a car for a day trip into the Alps nearby (the drive past Kochelsee to Walchensee is quite nice) or a drive out to the Wieskirche.

I would also recommend Tegernsee as an alternative lake holiday. Tegernsee is what I always suggest for a good lake/alps/villages combo close to Munich. The lake has several small villages surrounding it which are joined by bus, a foot/cycle path and ferries across the lake. There is a great Brewery/Restaurant right on the lake, Bräustüberl Tegernsee. If the weather is nice you can take the cable car up Wallberg and hike to a hut in the mountains for nice lunch. It can be accessed from Munich using the BOB train (they have a combo BOB-MVV ticket). Since it is a touristy area there is a lot of good infrastructure for visitors including a discount card which gives you free use of local buses and discounts on the Wallberg cable car.

Hope this helps,

DJ

I heard about Bad Toltz. Is it worth visiting? We enjoy the small towns where we can meet the people and enjoy the culture. But we do also enjoy the half timbered buildings. You sound like you have been to that area. While we have been to Garmmish several times, we want to see new places. Any advise.

There are hardly any half timbered buildings in this (southeastern) part of Bavaria.

I almost mention Bad Tölz as location to explore but I wasn’t sure if you’d have a car or not (it’s not that convinient by bus from Starnberg). If you’ve been to Garmisch-Partenkirchen several times and enjoyed it then you would like Bad Tölz as well.

As demag says you won’t find half timbered houses here but the painted houses instead.

There is a lot to be explored nearby in addition to what I mention above:

Thanks for everyone's response. We were in Lindau last year in late September. The weather that day was cold and very windy. Additionally, my wife was not feeling well. She wants to go back. So is it possible to drive from Lindau through the Alpine Road in one week. We want to take it slowing soaking in the people and culture. Then we can drive to Lake Starnberg and Munich. Is this possible. Is there a better stretch of the road for scenery and culture.

The German Alpine Road from Lindau to Berchtesgaden is about 450 kms (280 miles) long. If you didn't stop you could easily do it in one day. With stops for sightseeing and meals it doesn't take longer than three days. But mind you the road is on the northern edge of the Alps and therefore not as interesting as roads in the Swiss and Austrian Alps where the mountains are much higher. Nevertheless it's quite scenic.
