Lake Konstanz Activities and Bodensee Card Plus

My girlfriend and I will be visiting Lake Konstanz from September 11, 2023 through September 15, 2023 and staying in the town of Konstanz. Is it worth getting the Bodensee Card Plus? We'll be travelling around the lake via busses, trains, and the ferries along with doing quite a few activities. Saw that the Bodensee Card Plus includes many of the activities we want to do. We already have a few things that we want to do such as visit the Isle of Mainau, Rhine Falls, Konstanz city tour, visiting Lichtenstein, and kayaking /sailing around the lake. But on the other end we have a few more activities on our list, but having a tough time narrowing it down to which ones to specifically do. Was looking to see if anyone had any recommendations for specifics of the following activities:

  • Wineries: There's a lot around the whole lake and really looking for which ones would be more worth it over others
  • Cable Cars: Seen quite a few cable cars on the eastern / southeastern side of the lake and having a tough time deciding between them. We'll probably only be able to do one of them.
  • Hiking: This could go hand in hand with one of the cable cars, but we have a general list of stuff in the area. Was looking for if there was any must dos in the area. We'll be going to Salzburg the week after and hiking around there as well, so keeping it close to the lake.
  • Museums: There are one or two museums that are on the itinerary like the Dornier Museum and the Zeppelin Museum, but know there are a lot more in the area.

If there is anything on the list that is a must do would also love to hear any suggestion!

Thanks!

We’ve spent a lot of time at Lake Konstanz but stayed on the opposite side. Just a couple of suggestions. For wineries and hiking in the wineries take the ferry to Meersburg. For cable car and hiking go to Bregenz where a marked path through the town will take you to to the cable car and access to great views and hiking trails. Ferry crossings are not fast and you only have a few days to explore so you are doing the right thing to figure out your priorities. We enjoyed the Zeppelin Museum and Mainau on your current list. Biking on the lakeside paths is also very popular. I’m not familiar with the Bodensee Card Plus but does it give you discounts on ferries and most of the attractions you mention? If so do the math to price out what you can realistically do in your time frame to see if it is worth it for you. Enjoy your time in this beautiful area. You’ll probably want to come back.

Look at the individual pricing of the attractions you are thinking about to see if it is worth buying the card or not, and not every attraction is covered by the card eg. Insel Mainau (great visit). Generally, I think the card is worth it if you are spending quite a bit of time there and intend to take a few boat rides and cables cars, and the card no longer has to be used on consecutive days.

With only four or five days choose what you really want to see without rushing about. You should receive a Bodensee West guest card for free public transport (bus/trains), but only for that part of the lake. Meersburg and Lindau are very attractive towns. Closer to home, Insel Reichenau (Unesco) is nice for a walk around, flat and scenic. Radolfzell has a decent small core, and plenty of easy walking to be had by the water and in the parkland to the east. On the Swiss side, in opposite directions, Stein am Rhein and St Gallen: Arbon, on the way to St Gallen, is a good spot.

I wouldn’t bother with Lichtenstein, unless you want to say you’ve been there, and it would take a chunk of time to get there. To throw a spanner in the works, take an early direct train to Lucerne for the day, you wouldn’t regret it.

As for museums, Dornier and Zeppelin are solid choices, but if you're into history, you might wanna check out other museums nearby too.
