Kempten to Kronberg - transportation question

My son is traveling to Germany in the fall for two music engagements, one in Kempten and one in Kronberg, and whether I accompany him is still up in the air. From what I can tell, the best place to fly into and out of would be Frankfurt, correct? Is it easy to get to both locations with the train (he is too young to rent a car)? When I look on the DB Bahn website, it looks like the journey from Kempten to Kronberg is very long, which makes no sense to me since I am pretty sure they are not that far from each other. Any ideas? Would it be much easier if I went and rented a car instead?

Also, if I do accompany him, it looks like the accommodations in Kronberg are already very full. Is there a place close by that is easily accessible by train? Would it be crazy to stay in Frankfurt and commute back and forth? Just trying to figure out all my options.

By the way, thank you to everyone that helped me when I was planning our trip to Augsburg earlier this month. We had a great time and everyone's suggestions were so helpful!!

Kempten is a lot closer to Munich than Frankfurt. It is in south Bavaria.
Kronberg is a suburb of Frankfurt and at the north end of the S4 S-Bahn line that runs every half hour to Frankfurt Hbf in 22 minutes. So staying in Frankfurt is certainly an option.

So it would make sense to fly open jaw to Frankfurt or Munich, which ever engagement is first and fly home from the other. Kempten and Frankfurt are 3 1/2 to 4 hours apart by train with a train change in Ulm.

Yes, train is the way to go.

Area you using the DB (German Railways) website to look up trains?: https://www.bahn.com/en/view/index.shtml
Kempten(Allgäu) is in southern Bavaria
"Kronberg" is more obscure, I found a "Kronberg im Taunus" in Hesse, north of Frankfurt am Main. Is that where you mean?

The train takes 4½ hours, back to Frankfurt and then a local train. That sounds right for the distance.

As Kempten is nearer Munich, one option is to fly into Munich and out of Frankfurt am Main.

Thank you Sam and Chris! I didn't realize that Kempten was closer to Munich, so I'll definitely look for an open jaw ticket.

In terms of traveling from Kempten to Kronberg, it sounds like the train would work as well as a car. Also, thanks for letting me know about the proximity of Kempten to Frankfurt. It definitely sounds like Frankfurt would work, though being near the S4 S-Bahn would be ideal. Do you know any particular neighborhoods that I should target that might be near that train line?

Kempten is not near to Frankfurt, it's south west of Munich. All trains headed to Füssen, Pfronten, Oberstdorf and some headed to Lindau stop there. So if your son is performing in Kempten first it makes sens to fly into Munich. Kronberg is, as stated above, near Frankfurt. If you think it should be near Kempten, please look up the the correct spelling. Perhaps it is Kronburg, which is not that far from Kempten and hosts Kronburg Castle which organizes some concerts during the summer? In that case it would make sense to book an round trip in and out of Munich.

If it is indeed Kronberg, here is the website of the castle, which also hosts music programs.

The S4 line terminates in Kronberg. The other end is at Langen, south of Frankfurt, running through central Frankfurt with stops at Konstablerwache, Hauptwache, Frankfurt Hbf.

Perhaps Ms Jo will see this and suggest a good area to stay in Frankfurt.

Addendum re your flight: you might explore possibilites to fly into Memmingen, which is served by a daily Ryanair flight from Dublin. It's a 10 min bus ride to Memmingen station and from there an half hours train ride to Kempten.
