Anyone have a suggestion for a stopping off stay in or around Karlsruhe? We are on our way from Fussen to St. Goar but thought it might be too long of a drive for one day. Any suggestions or alternatives very welcome, this is our first trip in Germany, and are returning slowly from Salzburg towards Amsterdam, over the course of 12 days. Thanks!
We used to live near Karlsruhe. Actually between there and Heidelberg. I was teaching at an American school near Heidelberg. Heidelberg would be a great stop for a night. Famous castle, bridge, old town along the river. Do some research for a hotel.
Thank you Judy, we will look into that, great to know!
Heidelberg is a city of some size. There are some charming small towns in the area. including...

Heppenheim: http://gotravelaz.com/wp-content/uploads/images/Heppenheim_13023.jpg
Hirschhorn is upstream from Heidelberg. You can stay in the castle there - it's a hotel/restaurant with an awesome outdoor terrace.
Karlsruhe has a very grand palace and garden complex, although much of the rest of the city is a modern post WWII rebuild. I like Heidelberg far better, but then Russ one-upped me and mentioned my absolute nostalgic favorite of all, Heppenheim. BTW, in that picture he linked, the view to the back of the cameraman is even more stunning. A castle ruin hovers over the market square on top of a small mountain, covered in terraced vineyards. As much as I love Heppenheim and Heidelberg, however, they aren't even close to being half-way to your next stop in Füssen.
Hey, they are going the other way, so it is more than half way to St Goar.
Now that we mentioned Fussen again, any suggestions for a bnb in that area? We are stopping off at Neuschwanstein just prior, coming from Salzburg that same day. Thanks everyone!
Oops, my bad...
If you want a town to see near Karlsruhe, I suggest Rastatt.
