Just over 24 hours in Nuremberg

We arrive from London by train at midday on Saturday 18/07 and need to be heading to Colmberg Castle on 19/07 by train, we are stopping in the Ibis old town, i think we need to leave by 16.00-17.00 at latest.

After reading various sites and taking into account our interests the top things i would like to see are The Documentation Centre and Rally Grounds, The Nuremberg Trials Memorial, Kaiserburg castle and St John's Cemetery (we hope to visit the cemetery on the Saturday after The Documentation centre/Rally grounds close. That would leave us The Castle and Nuremberg Trials Memorial to visit on the Sunday , does that seem a reasonable itinerary ?

Other things we hope to do involve drinking beer and eating sausage (when in Rome and all that), hopefully visiting the oldest sausage restaurant, anyone recommend good beer gardens with views of Castle ?

Cheers

Paul

The "rally grounds" are now little more than a large public park, with fragments of the ampitheater here and there. Other than the shell of the Congresshall, there isn't much left. Your time is tight and actually exploring the park involves a lot of walking, so I think you could suffice to visit the Documentation Center.

I know of two beer gardens in the city, and neither really offer a view of the castle. One, though, is very close to the Documentation Center. The other is in an outer district. However, there's several restaurants near the castle that serves Nürnbergerbratwurst. I don't remember the name, but there also a nice outdoor restaurant that sits elevated on part of the town ramparts (if the Altstadt is a clockface, and the Hauptbahnhof is at 6 o'clock, it's at about the 4:30 position).

Thanks, Sam, that's it exactly... looks more like the 3 o'clock position, actually.

I agree with the Restaurant Kopernikus at the Krakauer Gate when it is open in the warm months. It's my favorite Beer Garden in Nürnberg: www.restauration-kopernikus.de/

You might try the beer garden on the other side of Altstadt Nürnberg: http://www.restaurant-biergarten-kettensteg.de/

I recommend a visit to the Dürer Hase market area by the Dürer house. If you go out the Tiergärtnertor here and walk along the wall outside of the old city to the north, you can come back into the castle from the north. You get a good view of the massive walls and it is an easier walk up to the castle then directly from the main market.
