I’m going to Germany soon to visit my son and I’m a US citizen. I also am disabled. I have a brain injury and am considered 100% disabled. I’ve heard that some countries in the EU give you discounts on tourist attractions or meet you for free do you have any information about this and what documentation that you need before you leave the United States thanks Julie.
Some countries offer discounts for disabled travelers, even if they are not citizens. The UK springs to mind. However, I do not believe that Germany is one of them, as discounts are reserved for tax-paying residents of that country.
I'm not sure what you mean by "meet you for free," but if you are talking about someone meeting you at the airport, you would arrange that with your airline. They can arrange for a wheelchair if you need one.
If you need any other help, I'm not sure where you would find that. Have you talked to your son about this?
Yes and I have traveled in Italy where I gained a friend I made ther had some type of documentation that allowed him to get into most places for free or a nominal price. I have a traumatic brain injury and had a Neck fracture that ended my nursing career 12 years ago. I simply cannot get in a crush of people. It makes me feel so anxious. A patient was responsible for my accident.
Again, Italy may have that but I really don't think Germany does. I would suggest maybe that your son check into any help that you might receive in Germany. He would probably be in a good position to do so.
That said, I did check on train travel and Deutsche Bahn (the official German national rail company) offers accessible travel to all passengers, so you might want to check into that. Here is a link to the English translation with contact information: https://int.bahn.de/en/booking-information/accessible-travel
We travel with our son who has Downs Syndrome. He frequently is allowed in many places for reduced price and sometimes we are charged for him but one of us gets in free because of his handicap. We go to Germany yearly and rarely are charged full price for him except for train and bus transportation. We buy the Deutschland ticket so we get all city transportation included with that. I'm not sure how wed be charged if he had a physical handicap.
