Jennerbahn alternative

Hi everybody... wondering if anybody knows an alternative to the Jennerbahn cable car, as it's out of commission for the time being. Or is there an alternate way up? Would prefer something with a lake view if possible. Thanks!!!

LOL Good timing - we just returned from a 3 week trip yesterday that included Berchtesgaden, but with all my research i had not seen that the Jennerbahn cable car was closed. We took about a 90 minute loop walk that gave us views of the lake up to the church. We started on the dock by the lake and walked counter clock wise. When we passed by the base of the Jennerbahn, there were a lot of other hikes that were signposted and a lot of hikers, so trails are open but might be steep and long.

We stayed in Ramsau and found some wonder hikes in the Hintersee area. We did all our exploring using the local bus system and with planning, it worked out quite well.

Let me know if you want more information. I probably saved some maps. At the train station we bought an English guidebook by David Harper that includes some hikes. The shop at the station had lots of maps and hiking guides but this was the only resource they had in English.

BTW - on a different topic, if you arrive by bus or train, take a "helper" if you use the WC. My German is rusty and I did not understand that the sign said the door works to go in but it does not open from the inside ;-)

I spent 5 days in the Berchtesgaden area in May. Like Jennifer, I stayed in Ramsau. I found David Harper's guide book very helpful for planning my time there (including for hiking). He is the owner of Eagles Nest Historical Tours, which is RS-recommended. You can buy the guide online here.

Dave, I'm leaving in less than 2 weeks. It would never get here in time. Is there somewhere I could buy it once I'm there?

There is a shop in the train station/bus center that has maps and hiking guides. That's where we got our book. I think that is about the only English resource we had.
