Itinerary Suggestions/Recommendations

My husband and I are trying to flesh out our itinerary a bit and would love your suggestions. We have 14 days total (that includes our international flights to/from the east coast of the US) and we are trying to get a mix of things. We're going late September 2019, on purpose, for Oktoberfest. We are up for pretty much everything, I'd be happy running around, eating sausage and gawking at things all day. Trying to not go too crazy and Amazing Race with it but we are not opposed to a up early/late to bed adventure. We plan on taking mostly rail but aren't opposed to getting a car when/if needed.

Fly into Zurich (possible overnight here, 'cause jet lag)
3 nights Interlaken area (will post about this is on the Switzerland board as well)
2 nights Freiburg/Staufen/Southern Black Forest area
** this is the one I'm really not sure on, we'd love to do some hiking, thermal baths, eat some food, maybe a small castle?? I picked southern Black Forest because it seems to be make better travel sense.
3 nights Munich (mid-week, 1st week-ish of Oktoberfest - As long as we get to the fest and see Alte Pinakothek I'm cool)
1 night Rothenburg ob der Tauber (guilty pleasure/to do our shopping and such)
- stop over in Wurzburg (if possible to literally take a pic in front of the Siebold museum because apparently the guy is an ancestor of my husbands family - Americanized as Sypolt. You can see how that got messed up).
Fly out of Frankfurt

Well, thats a kind of shotgun itinerary. But I think it would make more sense flying into Frankfurt, heading south to Black Forest (I'd omit), down to Berner Oberland in Switzerland, up to Munich and back to Frankfurt via Rothenburg and Wurzburg. Although, thats a lot of places in just two weeks, leaving little if any time to do those little fun things, or side trips. Mostly seeing things out of the train window.

Or, skip Switzerland and the Black Forest area, and add the middle Rhine valley. Or skip Frankfurt and the Black Forest and concentrate on Switzerland and Bavaria. Just my thoughts.

That sounds like you have maybe 11-12 days. Here's a plan for 11.

On Day 1 from ZRH just go to Interlaken. You will arrive in the morning probably and it's only 2 hours by train to Interlaken from ZRH. Jet lag doesn't prevent you from making a train ride. 3 nights there.

The best short stay in the Black Forest isn't Freiburg (which isn't in the Black Forest at all) or thereabouts. Suggest you consider staying in the very attractive old-world town of Gengenbach, which has a mid-September Weinfest and is <4 hours from Interlaken and gives you access to the Black Forest Railway (one of Germany's most scenic train routes) and the towns of Gutach (visit the Vogtsbauernhof open air museum!) Schiltach, Haslach, Triberg, and others. 2 nights there.

Train ride of 4.5 hours for 3 nights Munich (no comments except reserve now and expect very high prices anyway.)

train ride north for 3 nights in the Rothenburg area. You have no idea, if you are reading only Rick Steves, how much there is to see and do in this region. I would spend 2 nights somewhere else besides the tourist-heavy R'burg - or possibly all 3 nights somewhere else and just visit R'burg for several hours. A few other (possibly better) highlights include...

Würzburg
Iphofen
Sommerhausen - https://www.sommerhausen.de/en/tourism
Marktbreit
Nuremberg - https://www.schloesser.bayern.de/englisch/palace/objects/nbg_burg.htm

If you have more than 11 nights maybe you need to overnight in Frankfurt or Mainz near the airport? From Würzburg however you can reach FRA airport in about 1.5 hours, so a final night in Würzburg should be OK if your flight out isn't too early. You cold easily spend an extra night in Munich or in the Würzburg/Rothenburg area and find plenty to do.

All areas are great to visit, but I would eliminate one of them. You are trying to cover too much ground.
