Itinerary suggestions &best airport

We are going to Germany in early September with reservations in Oberammergau for 2 nights & tickets for the Passion Play. We have already hit many of Rick Steves' highlights: Nurnberg, Bacharach, Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Munich, Garmish, Berchtesgade, a Rhine river cruise stopping at Breisach, Speyer, Heidelberg, Rudesheim & Cologne.

For this trip, I'm considering a circle that can begin/end in Zurich, Munich or Frankfurt. Arriving in Frankfurt, the trip would include Baden-Baden, the Black Forest High Road, Short & Scenic Black Forest Highlands Drive and stay in Freiburg for the drives. Maybe a night in Staufen then onto Lake Constance staying in Meersburg or Konstanz with a day trip to Mainau, Taking the Alpine Road to Oberammergau, side trip to Linderhoff Castle, a few nights in Garmish then the Romantic Road to Rothenburg, Wurzburg (what do you think of this town) then fly out of Frankfurt.

We prefer the smaller, quaint, quiet towns and don't need 5 star restaurants or night life. There are no confinements on our time away, as we are both retired. Our thoughts are 10-14 days for the trip. Thank you for your insights!

Lisa - I think you have planned the itinerary well. However, since you stated that you prefer smaller, quaint, and quiet towns toward the end of your journey, I would drop Wurzburg and either include Michelstadt or Bad Homburg. Both towns are near Frankfurt. You can drive from Rothenburg to Michelstadt.

I don't think staying in Freiburg "for the drives" is a sound strategy.

Looks like the first half of your trip is mostly within Baden-Württemberg. to me it sounds like you aren't aware of some of the area's most charming / significant places. Not your fault. This is an under-visited and underappreciated region where I think you need more resources than just Rick Steves.

That said, I'm no expert there either. But if I wanted to know more, I would check in with this Destination Expert at Tripadvisor, who has lived and traveled in the area extensively has several thousand forum posts, nearly all on Baden-Württemberg. Suggest you look into those forum posts for his recommendations:

Here's a delightful Bavarian town I can recommend in the north, just outside the border of B-W.

"Wurzburg (what do you think of this town)"

It's a nice city, much larger than a town. But it's surrounded by dozens of very nice smaller places (which I think is your goal)

like...

Iphofen,
Marktbreit,
Sommerhausen

These lovely but insolent places refused to line up on the "Romantic Road" so don't be afraid to wander off the tourist path in this area.

Nothing but a Thermal Bath in Bad Homburg? Seriously?
Let's see, the only original palace from Kaiser Wilhelm is here, because all the other ones were bombed during the war. The surrounding park and Orangerie are worth seeing as well as a tour through the palace.
The Redeemer Church that Kaiser Wilhelm 2 had built is stunning, a mix of art deco and Byzantine style. Near to Bad Homburg is the only reconstructed Roman fort, the Saalburg as well as a Hessen Park Open Air Museum.

The view of the Taunus mountains is quite pretty as Bad Homburg sits right in the middle of them.
Bad Homburg is a great city to visit at any time.
