Me and my husband will be travelling to Munich together with our two kids age 9 and 7 to the Black forest and then down again. We would like to stop and break the journey from Munich to the Black Forest....where do you suggest we stop? we all want to go to Europa park and see the black forest and then spend time in Bavaria as well. Can you please help us? thanks in advance

What do you like? I like natural scenery. The last time I went from the Black Forest to Munich, I spent 13 night along the southern border of Bavaria, in the Alps, from Oberstdorf in the West to Berchtesgaden in the East. I would recommend stopping in the Oberallgäu (Oberstdorf, Kleinwalsertal) on you way to Munich.

What time of year? Winter sports? Summer Lakes and hiking?

My husband and I did a road trip from Munich to the BF in the spring. We made our base Gengenbach, staying 5 nights in a quaint inn. We then took the train each day somewhere different (which is free with a Konus card when you stay in the BF): Triberg (nice hike to the waterfall) and Strasbourg, France. Kids love trains so I would suggest this. The station was a short walk from our inn. We also had a rental car and were able to visit the Volksbauernhof Museum, a BF Open-Air Museum, that has many original farm houses dating back to the 1600's. VERY interesting and educational. Thankyou for your help but we would like a shorter drive when we arrive as we are not used to long distance driving as we live in a very small island in the Meditterranean, MALTA...it is only 32 km from north to south ...so our longest drive is tat of an hour and kids are not used to it so we thought maybe we could break the route from munich to the bf

This is a bit tuff with the kids in mind. Maybe a southern route to the Bodensee/Lake Constance. Swimming, a boat ride to Mainau Island? http://www.mainau.de/home.html If you are really adventurous and ready to spend a Zeppelin flight? http://www.zeppelinflug.de/en/

I agree with the Schwarzwälder Freilichtmuseum Vogtsbauernhof too: http://en.vogtsbauernhof.de/ It is a bit to the north in the Black Forest though. I have a Lilliput Lane miniature of one of the old Famous Black Forest houses in the village there.

How many days do you have from/back to Munich? Bavaria opens options...

OK, you have kids and you don't want to travel too far the first day. How about stopping for the first night in Nördlingen, an authentic walled city with a wehrgang you can walk on.

Thankyou yes it is a good idea to stop at Nordlingen as it is about 3 and a half hours from munich to black forest so yes somewhere in between to break the route :)

You might want to hit Legoland in Germany (Gunzberg) or watch the Surfers in the city of Munich (on the Isar) on the way to the Englishergarten. Also, in Triberg (in the Blackforest area) you can show your kids the worlds biggest cuckoo clock (Schonack near Triberg).

The black forest area is absolutely stunning. There are lots of great shops, cafes, and the scenery is breath-taking. The bavarian cuckoo clock shops are a must there too since this is the region the cuckoo clock stemmed from. If you do look into getting a clock..make sure it is authentic though. I've heard about people going and ending up buying a "fake". (Here's a guide to help find an authentic one http://www.bavarianclockworks.com/7-steps-to-buying-an-authentic-cuckoo-clock/ ). I would also go hike through the forest region. Pack a day pack and you can easily be out there for hours and never repeat a trail!
