Itinerary in Black Forest for two days by train

I'll be going by train from Berlin to Hamburg to Cologne and then to the Black Forest. I would like to enjoy the small towns and German culture along the Black Forest Train Route. Any suggestions on where to stop and where to stay? Thank you.

We stayed in Gengenbach in the BF and took the regional trains to visit Triberg, Strasbourg, and other small towns. There's a wonderful Vogtsbauernhof museum in the area; actual farm houses from as early as the 1400's where you can see how people lived and worked. SO interesting.

I'll second Alexandra's recommendations. GENGENBACH is a very fine town on the Black Forest Railway and a good base for outings. The VOGTSBAUERNHOF is in Gutach (which you can reach by train) and offers a great look at local culture; the Black Forest Museum in Triberg is really good for this too - but the displays are nearly all in German only. THIS PAGE discusses the Black Forest Railway and some of the towns along it. I would also recommend a visit to SCHILTACH as well (not on the BF railway, but direct trains go there from Gengenbach.) Hosts in most BF villages will offer you the KONUS card for free use of regional trains and buses during your stay (and for discounts as well.) The KONUS card can be used to visit Freiburg too (on regional trains also, not the high-speed trains.)

Note that Strasbourg is not in the Black Forest - it's in France - and the KONUS card only gets you as far as the border, so you'll need a ticket from the border town (Kehl) to Strasbourg. The "EUROPASS 24h Mini" is a ticket sold by the local TGO transit authority for €6.60 that covers the border to Strasbourg and back. It's probably available in Gengenbach from a ticket machine but if not there, surely in Offenburg (train hub on the way to Strasbourg where you change trains.) You ride the regional train from Offenburg straight through Kehl to Strasbourg (about 30 minutes.) The normal trip price round trip is around €17 if you buy a normal DB ticket so look for the 24h mini deal.

This is similar to a question that I have. It looks like you can actually get many places in the BF by train. Does the train go anywhere near the waterfall in/near Triburg? I see the town is on the route but can't tell about the waterfall. Trying to determine if we need a car on a trip that will take us to Heidelberg, BF area and then to Alsace. We prefer trains but will drive if absolutely necessary. Thanks.

There is a bus stop just outside the train station in Triberg. You can hop on & go straight through town to the waterfall, otherwise, it's a manageable but fairly long uphill walk. If you're staying in the BF & have a KONUS card, the bus is free
