Itinerary Ideas: Traveling to Munich/Salzburg with an 11 month old

It'll be our first international trip with the little one and we're thinking of visiting Munich and Salzburg in August (probably going to be there for 1.5 weeks). From what I've read, it's best to not pack too much into the itinerary when traveling with a little one. Should we stick to just two locations or do you think we could squeeze in another spot? I'm thinking maybe visiting Neuschwanstein Castle? Also, what are some fun things to do with a little one in these cities?

Agree, I've had a 1 year old in Munich and this is true. Here are things we found fun and easy to do in Munich:

  • Munich Zoo - no explanation needed (there is a Biergarten for you as well)
  • Deutsches Museum: Kinderreich - Fun area in the basement of the the Deutsches Museum. It says it is for 3-8 but there is enough for a 1 year old to have fun with some supervision.
  • Spend time in the Englischer Garten - Feed some ducks and visit the nice carousel just north of the Chinesischen Turm Biergarten
  • Eat out at the Hofbräukeller - Good restaurant but the real draw for you will be the child care. You can drop your kid off at the staffed Kinderland and have a nice quiet meal. We haven't been in a while but it we typically tipped a few euros for the service.
  • Take a cable car up a mountain for a stroll through fields and cows. This might require a car depending on where you end up going.
  • Wildpark Poing - Safari type park. See Wolves, Lynx, etc.

I wouldn't recommend Neuschwanstein Castle as there is a lot of walking up and down the hill the waiting which is not fun carrying a 1 year old who doesn't want to be there (speaking from experience). I'd also recommend picking a hotel that has a playground adjacent if possible as this makes it easy to pop out of the hotel to burn off some energy if needed (MotelOne Sendlinger Tor in Munich has a small playground park right out front for example).

Hope this helps.
