We are flying in to Munich early September and out of Vienna 10 days later. We would like to see the Mosel River area, however I am not sure that it is reasonable from Munich. We were planning Munich- Salzburg - Vienna and are interested in fitting in Bavaria and Halstatt potentially. Is that ambitious? We would like to train mostly and we do not speak any german. We are not opposed to renting a car, but a bit nervous about the autobahn. Thanks for your consideration.

Hi, Nikki. Would you consider taking the RS tour Munich, Salzburg, Vienna? It also stops at Hallstatt. I took this tour this past December and arrived a day or so early in Munich to take a train ride down to Garmisch to get a brief taste of the Bavarian countryside. Other options might include Füssen or Mittenwald. Of course, this tour does not include the Mosel area.
Depending on dates, the tour might meet or exceed your needs and expectations. I learned so, so much and met nice folks. Plus, kicking back on the bus is better than making train connections or driving (IMO).
Nikki - Flying into Frankfurt would have given you better opportunity to see the Mosel river. You could have made a stop in Koblenz and take a ferry ride on the Mosel. From Munich, the journey there will be a long one.
Thank you for your help. I will check out the RS tour as well.
