Itinerary Help - Driving from Salzburg to Nuremburg

Hello, I am driving with my family of four from Salzburg to Nuremburg on Tuesday, March 31st. Does anyone have suggestions for sight seeing along the way? I am thinking Herrenchiemsee Palace or Dießen am Ammersee or drive directly to Rothenburg for sight seeing?

Thanks!

That's sort of a long drive, and Rothenburg is out of the way. You would have time for one decent stop. Chiemsee would be a good option, because it's right along the route, but it wouldn't break up the trip that well.

You could also consider Regensburg.

If you want "along the way" stuff, that will leave out Dießen and Rothenburg for sure. Click HERE (in German, just check the photos) to see what a handsome place Landshut is. It's in between. I've never seen the castle there but you might want to:

Trausnitz Castle

As others already said, Rothenburg or Herrenchiemsee aren't along the way. What's along the way is Burghausen, a cute town with the world's longest castle. Or see Altötting, Bavarias most important pilgrimage site. Nearby is also Wasserburg am Inn, a very picturesque little town. Regensburg is one of Germanys highlights, one of the very few truly medieval and preserved towns. Or how about Passau, which is very picturesque too.

If you take A8 to Munich and then A9 to Nuremburg, Herrenchiemsee is a short distance off the A8 to Prein.

Have a good trip!!!

"Herrenchiemsee is a short distance off the A8". At one point, A8 goes almost directly abutts Chiemsee. You get a nice view of the lake from the road. It's one of the most scenic stretches of the Autobahn network... but also one of the most congested.

March 31 is during the Bavarian Easter vacation time for school, but on a Tuesday the traffic should not be worse than usual on A8. A8 always seems to have a Stau somewhere along the Autobahn. I would agree with Chiemsee or take an alternate route and see Regensburg. In Regensburg there are several underground parking garages near the old city (Tiefgarage Arnulfsplatz or Tiefgarage am Theater/Bismarckplatz are what I use). Take a Navi device. The old bridge is still going through renovation. You can walk and see many sites in a few hours. As you get closer to Nuremburg you might consider the Altmühltal area and a city like Eichstätt if you go the A9 route.
