Itinerary help - Amsterdam - Rhine Gorge - Prague

Hi,
I would like to request feedback on the itinerary below. We are family of four with two teens. I am looking to create an itinerary that has a mix of big cities and small towns, and also beautiful scenery and light outdoor activities (hiking, biking etc.)

All feedback is welcome, but I'm especially wanting to check the Germany portion. For that portion I want to prioritize mainly quaint old towns and scenery, and to have a somewhat efficient travel plan between Amsterdam and Prague.

Bamberg and Dresden look appealing to me, but they were also chosen because they seemed like a good way to break up the distance between the Rhine Gorge area and Prague. That is the part of the trip I am least certain about and would be open to alternatives. I also considered adding a day in Aachen or Cologne after Amsterdam, but thought it may compress the back end of the trip too much.

June 25 fly from east coast US overnight

June 26-30 Amsterdam (4 nights)

June 30 - July 4 Rhine Gorge (Bacharach) (4 nights);

July 4 - July 6 Bamberg (2 nights)

July 6 - July 8 Dresden (2 nights)

July 8 - July 12 Prague (4 nights)

July 12 fly home

Current transport plan is:

1) Amsterdam to Bacharach -- train to Cologne, pick up rental car, drive to Bacharach (same day)

2) Bacharach to Bamberg (car)

3) Bamberg to Dresden (car); drop off car

4) Dresden to Prague (train)

I really like flying into AMS and have done your travel route to the Rhine and beyond several times. I would plan the trip from June 30 onward as follows.

6/30:

8:31 - 12:42 by train from AMS > Koblenz (1 transfer in Cologne)

Koblenz is a central rail hub for visiting the Rhine Valley region. Normally I visit the area in cooler months and stay in smaller towns like Bacharach, but summers have become unpredictable in Germany and very often hot, humid and miserable. The smaller towns just don't have a lot of options with a/c that will also accommodate families of 4, and your odds of sleeping comfortably go up in Koblenz were more modern facilities are available. Koblenz has some sightseeing (Ehrenbreitstein Fortress + the cable car ride that gets you there, for example) beyond what's in the small towns below too.

A car might be handy if you were staying in Bacharach, but frequent train connections from Koblenz up the Mosel River to Moselkern (for Burg Eltz Castle) and Cochem are excellent. Koblenz > Rhine town of Braubach (gorgeous town and Marksburg Castle) is only 10 minutes by train. Getting to St Goar / Oberwesel / Boppard from Koblenz takes half an hour or less usng the west bank railway along the Rhine. Service here is frequent as well, and train rides on the Rhine and Mosel rank among the most scenic train rides in Europe.

7/4:

From here on you are spending too much time changing accommodations in Germany. Not sure how long it would take to drive from Bacharach to Bamberg to Dresden and then catch the train to Prague... But I think you'll save time if you substitute Nuremberg for Dresden and stay in Nuremberg 4 nights. Koblenz > Nuremberg is just 4.5 hours by train (8:22 - 12:58 for example.) And Nuremberg, besides being a delightful old-world town with a small-town feel (Rick Steves agrees on this) for walking and sightseeing, is a GREAT train hub for outings. Your bags can just stay put there for 4 days while you do a day trip to Bamberg (only 40 minutes by direct train) and perhaps to 1 or 2 additional destinations (Bad Windsheim? Regensburg? Rothenburg? Iphofen? Bayreuth? They're all nearby.)

7/8:

Take the direct Flix bus from Nuremberg to Prague (3.5 hours, 9:10 - 12:45? other times as well.)

Bacharach - hike directly to Burgruine Stahlberg ( 3 miles rt ) or do the longer hike of about 12 miles that also includes the Burg Stahleck, the youth hostel castle above the town.

There is also a bike rental in town

In Boppard ypu can take the Hunsruck train up and then hike back, or take the chairlift and hike around, but take it down for great views
