itinerary help

Hello,
I know that this is a Germany blog but I am hoping to get some help. My husband and I are planning this for a 2 week trip to Europe. Any thoughts or input would be appreciated:

Fly into Paris early in the morning
check out the Eifel tour
train to Luxembourg
spend 3 days in the Luxembourg area
rent a car in Luxembourg and travel to Munich-- any suggestions on out of the way places along the way
?
go to Daschau and to the Neuschwanstein Castle
do 2 days of Oktoberfest

here is where we don't know what to do next: Prague or Berlin or fly to Florence...any ideas? We are not huge museum people more of out of the way, quirky places...

My husband does like to drive but we are not opposed to the train or to flying.

TIA

We are not huge museum people more of out of the way, quirky places...

The places you have in mind for Germany are definitely the well-pounded tourist trail - hard to see why you have chosen what you have chosen, except that maybe there isn't a "Book of Quirky Places" for Germany at the bookstore.

So I will toss out a few kinda quirky places I'm familiar with for Germany. Almost everything mentioned below is closer to Luxembourg than Munich is.

How about a museum that's not a museum? That's quirky. This place has a collection of real historical buildings from around the area:

Nearby is Idar-Oberstein, a gem paradise with a chapel nestled into a cliffside.

Cochem's "Bundesbank Bunker":

Also in Cochem: Medieval Knights' Meal:

Ongoing restoration of a settlement that once was part of Ancient Rome - Xanten:

Irrel (near Trier) - Panzerwerk Katzenkopf (GERMAN bunker) -

"Dragon's teeth" (anti-tank structures) that were never removed near the Westwall / Siegfried Line in the state of Saarland:

(Saarbrücken and St. Wendel are places you might hunt those down.)

Sleep in a wine barrel in Kamp-Bornhofen, on the Rhine River south of Koblenz:

Take a "Planwagenfahrt" ride into the vineyards on the Mosel River:

Take in a Medieval "Spectaculum" event - they travel throughout the summer to different towns - dates and towns at first link:

Have you been to Paris before? It's an amazing city that deserves a lot more than an afternoon to glance at the Eiffel Tower. (I'm not a big museum buff, either.)

Prague, Berlin, and Florence are all wonderful cities well worth visiting, but none of them are "quirky" in my opinion. They are all popular tourist cities - though because Berlin is so huge and spread out, it felt the "least touristy" to me (it absorbs the large numbers of tourist it gets better than Prague and Florence do). Berlin may still have some quirky areas. Probably all of the other places do, too. Prague and Florence are more charming than Berlin (in my opinion) just busier with tourists.

Munich is near Salzburg, another lovely, charming town, an easy train ride away.

But...you can fly anywhere from Munich if you don't really want to stick around. If you want "quirky," places that come to mind that I've been are: Montenegro and Bosnia in the Balkans and the three Baltic states (Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia). I actually love Slovenia and Croatia too. Croatia has become popular and touristy in parts though. Slovenia is no longer undiscovered but it is certainly less of a tourist Disneyland than Florence and Prague would be. The Slovenian capital Ljubljana is probably my favorite city in Europe.

There is plenty to see just in Germany between Luxembourg and Munich. I'd browse a Rick Steves Germany book (or some of his Germany PBS videos - free on YouTube) and see what might appeal to you. (Dresden might have some "quirk" - the old buildings in the old town are huge and dwarf those in some other big cities.) So could just end the trip in Munich after stopping along the way.

I have driven in Europe but never in Germany or Luxembourg. Both of those countries have excellent public transportation systems. I took the train through Germany - but I love trains. You might be careful about renting a car in one country and dropping it in another - check for one-way fees. Renting one just in Germany may be the most cost-effective, if you don't want to use the trains.

Renting in one country and dropping off in another can involve large fees. A friend was considering renting in Germany and dropping in Vienna. A $300 fee nixed that. 3 days in Luxemburg seems long, but not perhaps if you visit the Ardennes and Battle of the Bulge sites.

Get a Michelin Green Guide to get an idea of a good route to drive. I used to consider it the best, but even it is lacking in so, so much. After you get a general idea, start surfing the net and clicking on various links of towns along your route.

With just 2 weeks, I would end in Munich and fly home from there.

Have you been to Paris before? If you have not, why spend virtually no time there.

The Luxembourg area is nice, be sure to visit Gen Patton's grave at the American Cemetery east of Lux City.
Also, check out the small town of Viaden on the German border, northeast of Lux City. Trier, Germany is not far and with ancient Roman history there.

You could rent a car in Lux to take all that in, but your drop charge in another country could be high.

There are many places to see between Luxembourg and Munich. The Rhineland area, especially around Rudesheim is nice, take a short cruise on the Rhine. Heidelberg is worth a stop. The Romantic Road, from Wurzburg down to Fussen/Garmish is a great one.
https://www.romanticroadgermany.com

Munich has lots to see as do, as well as visiting places like Berchtesgaden and Salzburg, Austria, then Garmisch/Fussen for Ludwig's castles and the Zugspitze (highest mountain in Germany).

Frankly, I don't think you will have much time left after all what I suggested.
Paris 1 day
Luxembourg area 3 days
Heidelberg 1 day
Romantic Road, plan on staying in Rothenburg ob der Tauber. 3 days
Garmish/Fussen 3 days
Munich 3 days
Berchtesgaden/Salzberg 2 days.

That is more days than you have, but you can cut a couple of days off depending on what you want to do.
