itinerary feedback + transportation recs, please - Munich/Salzburg

My family of 4 adults will be meeting up for a week in Bavaria at the end of the month. Would love feedback on our itinerary - any big misses? Bad timelines? Don't want to overbook and be rushed. Don't want to be sitting around arguing about how to fill time.

About us: interested in history, art & architecture, culture, breweries & cocktails. Not big foodies, so don't need high end dining, but do appreciate quality basics. For hotels we so tend toward the Marriott brands due to rewards status but if we've missed any affordable gems or chosen poorly, we can rebook.

I've read a ton and remain confused by transportation choices. Based on this agenda should we be looking at any passes or single tickets as needed?

Day 1 - Various arrivals at Munich airport early am through midday
- Sbahn to central station - staying at Munich Aloft
- Explore Old Town / Marienplatz, walk off jet lag
- dinner TBD

Day 2 - Munich
- 11:30 guided bike tour to Englischer garden
- Aur Dult festival OR Pinakothek (depending on our mood)
- Dinner in Glockenbachviertal neighborhood (Xaver's, HeimWerk)

Day 3 - Munich
- Residenz tour
- lunch at Viktualienmarkt or Hofbruhaus
- BMW World/museum - what is the best transportation option here?
- OlympiaPark – and dinner at Restaurant 181 (17:30 reservation) - I understand this is closing in a month, is service falling off as a result? Best transport back to hotel?

Day 4 - Salzburg

- Morning train (around 9am) - was planning to book WestBahn but recent reviews look bad?
- Drop luggage at hotel (Sheraton Grand Salzburg)
- Lunch recommendations?
- Fortress Hohensalzburg
- Considering a river tour late afternoon TBD weather and if we get Salzburg card
- St. Peter's Abbey
- Dinner - Barenwirt? Augustiner Brau?

Day 5 - back to Munich
- Possibly do fortress in the morning instead of previous day? - Salzburg Card morning ticket includes extra room access
- Mirabell Palace Gardens
- Lunch and train back to Munich
- Check in at Munich Marriott West
- Fruhlingsfest

Day 6
- Morning at Nymphenburg
- Lunch at Hirschgarten
- Train to Freising - Marriott Munich Airport Hotel
- Weihenstephan Monastery Brewery
- Dinner recommendations??

Day 7
• Return flights beginning at 9a

All reservations can still be moved around.

In Munich, the Hotel am Viktualienmarkt has family rooms and the location is fantastic. We have stayed there twice. They do not have rooms that sleep 4, but if you decide to get 2 rooms then I highly recommend it. We absolutely loved this hotel! Even if you do not stay here, come for cocktails in the evening. The atmosphere is wonderful and they have an extensive drinks menu. We did not have dinner here, but when we came back in the evenings and saw what others were eating, it all looked very good. Breakfasts here are the best. Cooked to order, not off a menu.

In Salzburg, we really enjoy Zwettler's and Johaneskellar. Zwettlers is open for lunch as well as dinner. You definitely need reservations at Johaneskellar and need to email them for that.

I second Zwettler's !

And visit Augustiner Brau Kloster Mulln - enjoy drinking a brew under the sycamore trees in the courtyard. It was our daily pleasure when we visited Salzburg with friends.

Also check out Cafe Tomaselli, Die Weisse, and Zum Zirkelwirt.

We also stayed at the the Hotel am Viktualienmarkt . Great location!
For Day 3, take the S-bahn to the BMW Welt and museum, I suggest you buy the group day ticket. That's what we did
The S-bahn station stop is Olympiazentrum
https://www.mvv-muenchen.de/en/tickets-and-fares/tickets-daytickets/group-day-ticket/index.html.
Olympiapark is a short walk from the BMW museum.
You can walk or take the shuttle from outside the BMW Welt into OlympiaPark to the restaurant and then walk back to the S-bahn station afterwards.
For anything in the Munich area, use the S-bahn.

On Day 1, from the Munich Airport to Marienplatz, take the S-bahn, either line S-1 or S-8. Again, look at buying the group day or group single ticket. You would get off at Munich Hfb- and walk across the street to your hotel.

Nymphenburg is easily reachable by the S-bahn.

Instead of the Munich airport Marriott, Stay at the Munich Airport Hilton, which is at the airport. Very convenient for an early flight. No other transportation needed. You walk to the ticket counters, etc.
We ate dinner at Airbrau at the airport and there is the high end, Mountain Hub social dining restaurant at the airport.

On a different note, we took a Segway tour of Munich which visited the Englishgarten and other Munich sites. We really enjoyed it.

Nymphenburg is easily reachable by the S-bahn.

That's not the way I would do it. To get to Nymphenburg using the S-Bahn, you have to take the train to the Laim station, then walk 160m to the bus stop and take at bus (51 or 151) to the bus stop on the street in front of Nymphenburg.

I assume you are staying at the Loft at Astallerstr. 2. From there you would need to walk ½ km to the Donnersbergerbrücke S-Bahn station to catch the S-bahn to Laim. Instead, keep walking another 6 min. (½ km) up Donnersbergerstr. to Arnulfstr. and catch the #17 tram. It goes directly to Nymphenburg (stops at about the same place the bus stops) in about 8 minutes.

The S-bahn station stop is Olympiazentrum

The "Bahn station at Olympiazentrum is a U-Bahn (U2) station. You can board the U2 at the underground station in Marienplatz. Look for the blue sign with a large 'U'.

  • Weihenstephan Monastery Brewery
  • Dinner recommendations??

It's not fancy, but there is an outdoor Biergarten right there at Weihenstephan. Sit under the trees and enjoy good beer and traditional beer garden food.

Ask a question, go to work, and come back to great feedback. Thank you!

@Lee - for the Nymphenburg day we will be staying at the Marriott Munich East (the Aloft days are on the front end of the trip - and that is at Bayerstrasse 37 near the central train station).

@derek - are you suggesting to stay in town longer and just get to the airport for dinner and sleep (vs. check out Freising for the second half of the day)? We can get the Marriott there (or the Moxy at the airport) free off points, so were planning to do that as a "throwaway" night and a short cab to the airport. But if there truly is nothing of interest to see, we can make that pivot and just get to the airport to sleep.

@MIkliz97 and Carla - looking into the hotel option to possibly swap for Aloft. And thanks for the additional Salzburg recs.

I should have noted family is us parents and 20 + 23 yo sons who are somehow 6'2" and 6'4". So we definitely need two rooms to fit everyone without leaving the country estranged from one another :D

Oh, one more question - on day 1 we will be arriving at 6 am. The guys will be showing up together around 1pm (they are meeting up for a brothers' weekend in Amsterdam prior - I'm not asking questions!)

If we purchase a group day ticket to get to the hotel in the morning - can it be shared with them remotely so they can also use the same ticket later in the day? It's a small savings vs. two separate, but curious how that works with online tickets.

And how big a difference is the regional train (Bayern Ticket) vs. the high speed Railjet/WestBahn for the Salzburg leg. Bayern is definitely the most affordable and it looks like it's only 30min longer, but we do want to enjoy the journey.

I've made many trips between Salzburg and Munich on those regional trains, and I've never found them to be unpleasant. I'm sure the others, ICE/EC/RailJet/WestBahn are somewhat more luxurious, if that matters to you, but the times are similar, particularly since the regional trains run more often (less time waiting, on average).

By the way, it's Bayern-Ticket, no 'e'.
