Itinerary feedback please! - Germany and Salzburg

Hello! I am planning a trip for myself, husband and two sons - ages 18 and 20. I would love any thoughts/feedback. We will be utilizing trains for this trip - not renting a car.

May 25 - Arrive Munich 8:20 am - leave airport, take Train to Nuremberg (allow 2.5 hours for travel) - spend afternoon exploring Nuremberg - trying to stay awake until after dinner!
May 26 - Day trip to Bamberg
May 27 - Explore Nuremberg
May 28 - Train to Salzburg (allow 3 hours for travel) - possibly spend morning in Nuremberg, travel in afternoon? Would like to get to Salzburg by late afternoon
May 29 - Sound of Music Bike Tour / explore Salzburg
May 30 - Eagle's Nest / Salt Mines
May 31 - Salzburg / afternoon train to Munich
June 1 - BMW tour / Olympic Park
June 2 - Day trip to Zugspitze - weather depending, if not exploring Munich
June 3 - Spend day in Munich - possibly walking tour / beer hall tour
June 4 - 10:20 Flight home

It's a fast paced schedule, but we are fine with being on the go. Trying to pack as much as we can in the amount of time we have but still leave enough time to wander and enjoy cities. Any input or suggestions on things you have done in these areas that you would recommend or city tours - walking tours etc. would be much appreciated!

Looks thoughtful and well organized to me on the whole. Personally, I don't find the salt mine tours particularly interesting. Don't know if you can find time for Werfen-area things - the Eisriesenwelt and Hohenwerfen Castle are pretty nice ones - one or both might be doable if you steal time from Munich, which at present doesn't appear to have rigorous line-up of activities.

For mountain splendor. you might skip the somewhat lengthy Zugspitze day trip from Munich and instead do the Jennerbahn (gondola lift) and/or the Königssee experience while in Berchtesgaden. It's a lovely place.

Do you have a plan for ticketing your transport yet? You might want to share it if so for feedback.

Russ - thank you! You are correct, Munich isn't heavily scheduled yet. I will look into the Werfen area, that's a great tip! I like the idea of the alternative to Zugspitze. We are not set in stone with Zugspitze - just want some mountain experience. Your idea might be better - I am going to look at that.
For travel, I have nothing booked/set yet. From what I read we don't need to buy train tickets ahead of time. From the little bit I have looked at there are so many trains every day. I'd like to use the ICE as much as possible as those are faster. If you have any tips/suggestions, I am open to as much help as possible!!

Thanks!!

From what I read we don't need to buy train tickets ahead of time.

For regional tickets or local trips, that's correct. It's only if you have long distance tickets that you should book as far ahead as possible. But with your itinerary, you could use the Bayern pass for your trip.

You also might want to check into the Deutschland pass - €49 pass that goes into effect on May 1st. For €49, you can get unlimited rides for one month. It is a subscription so you have to register for it and then cancel when you leave, but it's a very good deal. You can find more about it here: https://www.bahn.com/en/offers/regional/deutschlandticket

Mardee - Wow! That's a great option for the train travel. I will definitely look into that. Thank you so much!!!

I like both the salt mines ( 4 times ) and Werfen Ice Cave ( twice ). If you plan on doing the ice cave, remember the word ICE ! Take along some gloves and something for your head as well as a jacket.

Not as spectacular, but the Untersberg mountain cable car is just outside Salzburg.

I was planning to book tours for Eagle's Nest with the Eagle's Nest Historical Tours. I am reading that the Documentation Center and Bunkers are closed for renovation. Is it still worth it to do the tour or should we just pay the fee to ride the bus up and look around on our own? My kids are really interested in seeing this, but I don't want to waste several hours on this if what the most historical/best part of the tour is unavailable.

Any feedback/opinions on this would much appreciated! I am having a hard time finding any reviews/feedback on it with these limitations. Thank you!!!

Depending on the time of year and weather go to the Königssee. Take an electric boat to St. Bartholomäus,

Totally agree with mchpp! What an incredibly beautiful area for the boat ride. You can also take the boat a little further for great hikes, and the name of the second stop escapes me.
Safe travels!

The name of the last boat stop at Königssee is 'Salet'.

I did not know that there is a beer hall tour in Munich but I would anyway suggest skip it. In May is already beer garden season and no local will sit inside.

My favorite beer garden is at the Wiener Platz. Augustiner beer garden near Central Station is great as well. And of course Chinese Tower in the English Garden.

Cool trip for you, your husband and your sons!

I agree with others that Eisriesenwelt is well worth a visit. I would expect it to appeal to young men your sons' age. Werfen I have only seen from a distance.

Eagles Nest is pretty cool in and of itself for the building and for the views. It is best to go on a sunny day.

Königssee is also pretty awesome. I fully endorse taking the boat all the way to the Salet stop, taking the 10-minute walk to Obersee (a smaller lake), hiking on the right side of Obersee to the other side of the lake, then ascending to a nice alpine meadow, and then heading on to Röthbach Waterfall at the far side of the meadow. It's gorgeous. Again, clear skies are ideal.

You've been given plenty of great suggestions. You may be tired upon landing but I think it makes more sense to head straight to Salzburg first. Hellbrunn is a good visit. Do try and fit in the Werfen things. A salt mine visit is worth it, if you have the time. Bad Reichenall has a small, attractive old core, and pleasant walking elsewhere and by the river.

At Konigssee, stop at St Bartholomew's first before going to Salet, not the other way around (especially if it's busy). Nice wooded trails here. From Salet hike past the next small lake (Obersee - great photo opportunities) and onto Rothbach Falls. There's a lakeside cafe at Salet, many more options when you return to the starting point. The cable car to Mt Jenner is close by, more photo opportunities.

Find some time for Nymphenburg in Munich. We once spent the better part of a day there (palace museum, extensive grounds, good cafe near the main entrance).

I've searched for the Fischunkelalm opening date for 2023, but cannot find it (Obersee). I was there early - mid May a few years ago the last time and it was not open yet. A great blue sky day though and I would not have missed it reguardless. A Buttermilch or a Bier.

Since the Kehlsteinhaus was mentioned, Hitler visited both the Königssee and Obersee, and Herman Goring had a hunting cabin in the mountains over the Obersee. Maybe not your intent when visiting the Kehlsteinhaus.
