Itin planning - Searching for destination for 2 nights -- in between the Rhine Valley and Gotha

Need help finding a worthwhile destination. We're planning a trip where we spend the first 2 nights in the Rhine Valley (Oberwesel), and have to be in Gotha for an event 2 days later. So we have 2 days where we're not sure where to go, and ideally we don't want to go too far out of the way because we'll be driving with a baby.

Day 1: land in FRA drive to Oberwesel
Day 2+3: stay in Oberwesel & explore Rhine Valley towns
Day 4+5 ???
Day 6 + 7: Gotha, then back to FRA

Any suggestions? Should we spend more time in the Rhine or is there something else we can see along the way to Gotha? We've already seen Marburg...
Thanks!

Drive straight to Erfurt, which is the capital of Thuringia, where Gotha is located. Erfurt is one of the prettiest and best preserved towns of Germany and a good base to explore the surrounding. The usual day trips are Wartburg castle (Eisenach) and Weimar. If Wartburg castle doesn't take the whole day you can drive a few kilometers to Schmalkalden, a cute little town with a very nice centre full of half-timbered houses. If you want a fairytale town like Rothenburg, but without the tourist hordes, see Quedlinburg.
BTW: Gotha is also quite interesting. It was the capital of a tiny duchy called Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, where the Windsors are from. It's a small town with several huge government buildings, among them a impressive castle with a nice museum.
PS: it takes ~30min from Erfurt to Gotha.

And attractive towns between Oberwesel and Erfurt include Limburg, Büdingen, Gelnhausen, Fulda and Eisenach.

Sounds like you have been in Germany before, and maybe will be again, so depending on your level of interest, you might actually have a look into those special events and sites that will only be there for this year in connection with the Reformation anniversary. Have a look at this site for more information.
