Going to Germany for work, taking someone who has never been-limited time. Thoughts?
Fly into Munich at 7am Thursday. Munich on thurs-fri. Train to Salzburg Sat, with overnight, return Munich Sunday evening. Work in Raubling Mon-Thurs. Return to Munich, enjoy Munich one more day. Friday take train to Garmisch-stay one night or two, return to Munich-Fly home Monday. The dates are Wed. April 20 to Monday May 2. thought Salzburg would be a great taste of train and Austria for her, and Garmisch very lovely, small, and the trains go direct. Open to suggestion. Thanks
Sounds pretty good to me. However, I don't think Garmisch-Partenkirchen is that interesting. You might try Mittenwald instead (or Oberammergau or Pfronten).
Thank you, Lee. I was hoping you would chime in--Great suggestion.
Mittenwald is a lovery little town. I like me it better than G-P.
would any of you,,thanks, by the way,,recommend Mittenwald for 2 nights?
Like others stated, GaP isn't that great of a village it just happens to be close to good hiking and skiing.
Mittenwald is a nice town but a little out of the way so I'd recommend 2 night to make the trip worth it.
Another option that I always recommend for people looking for a small village get away close to Munich is Tegernsee right at the foot of the Alps (1 hr from Munich using the BOB train). There are five villages surrounding the lake that are linked by foot/cycle paths, buses and ferries.

Thank you!
linda: The Werdenfels ticket is a day pass that gets you to Garmisch and Mittenwald; unlike some day passes, it can be used on Fridays prior to 9 am (see this this DB brochure.) Note that it can also be used for the scenic train ride through Austria on the "Ausserfernbahn" route (from Garmisch to Pfronten) that you see on this map. As your visit to G-P and/or Mittenwald will be very weather-sensitive, this could be a good way to spend your time. Buy the Werdenfels ticket at any station ticket machine in Munich, G-P or Mittenwald.
Here are some photos of this train ride (text in German) and a route map.
The Fraundorfer Inn in G-P offers a fun "Bavarian Evening" along with its tasty traditional dishes.
If you stay in G-P, you can obtain a free visitors card which offers free local transportation and other benefits that may enhance your visit. From G-P it's very easy to visit Mittenwald, btw, on a train ride of 20 minutes.
"Mittenwald is a nice town but a little out of the way"
It's 21 minutes by train from Garmisch-Partenkirchen to Mittenwald.
Ok you got me, Mittenwald is not that far from Munich compared to itineraries we typically see on this forum (heck I'm sure lots of people do it as a day trip). Just wanted to point out it would be the most distant location of the proposals given to the OP, and therefore I'd recommend two nights since time is precious when one tries to squeeze in a vacation as part of a business trip.
For reference for the OP
- Munich to Salzburg is 1:37
- Munich to Raubling is 0:50
- Munich to GaP is 1:23
- Munich to Mittenwald is 1:52

Thank you all! So much more than I hoped for, and enough to make a great decision, which may include a couple more days! Much appreciated!!
