We have a small local travel agency in our town whose owner/operator/tour guide recently passed away. We've always done Christmas market tours with them and will no longer be able to since it's shut down. Can anyone recommend a company? I know the major ones like Globus, Go Ahead, Tauck, Trafalgar but I'm not sure how the pace of their tours are. We really liked the smaller groups (20 or so), a relaxed pace, hotels that are local B&Bs, a nice amount of free time, and not a run-run-run from early morning till night. I'm hoping to find a smaller company that's more personable.
Is there a reason why you want to be with a tour group rather than just travel to a few cities, use them as bases and then visit the smaller markets? This is very easy to do. If you let us know which markets you have already seen, we can suggest some other ones and help you with the planning.
Oh I know it can be done on my own and I typically travel that way, planning the itinerary, hotels, etc... My husband and I spent our 30th anniversary in April in the Black Forest, rented a car, took trains, etc.... But I do like the ease of going on a small tour bus, the itinerary and stops already planned out, the luggage taken care of at each hotel. I'm planning a trip with a friend who has never been to Germany (I go nearly every year). Thought this would be easy for us both, considering the time of year and the weather. Hauling a suitcase over cobblestone streets isn't fun, particularly in the rain or sleet. I've done the Christmas market tour with our local agency 3x and loved it.
