Is this too much?

Hi! I am in the process of planning my first trip to Germany. After pouring over the guide book, I think I have an agenda, but would love some feedback. The trip will be in late August/early September, and we are flying into and out of Munich. My husband has been before and wants me to see Neuschwanstein and Berchesgarden. I'm thinking we spend our first day in Munich (we will land at 9:00am and need to stay awake to avoid jet lag) doing a city tour and just staying active. The next day, we'd take a morning train to Fussen and spend two nights there hitting the luge and castles. From there, we'd go to Salzburg for three nights and two days to hit the Eagles Nest and see the city (and for me to eat all the pastries). Then, it's back to Munich for four nights and three days of sight seeing before flying home.

Does this sound possible? I think we can do all the travel with Bayern tickets fairly affordably. I just want to be sure we have some downtime. For some reason this feels more relaxed than staying in Munich the whole week and taking day tours. Also, will hotels in Germany hold your bags prior to check in?

Thanks for the feedback. My head is swimming!

Yes, as long as it's a hotel and not an apartment.

Yes, as long as you leave after 9 AM each workday, you can go from Munich to Füssen, from Füssen to Salzburg, and from Salzburg back to Munich using Bayern-Tickets (28€ each day for two of you). If you can commit to a specific train in advance, with advance purchase tickets, the trip from Salzburg to Munich could be only a euro more, 29€ for two, and a half hour faster, but the Bayern-Ticket would also cover your transportation to your hotel, if needed, by any conveyance in Munich.

For the airport into town the first day, buy a Gesamtnetz Gruppen-Tageskarte, for 22,30€.

Compared to most of the impossible itineraries people post here, this one is positively laid-back. Just southern Bavaria and a smattering of upper Austria in 10 nights. Very nice.

I agree. You have a good itinerary with good time in each location. I've done a similar trip in a similar time frame at the beginning of September and really enjoyed it.

Thanks so much for all the info! I just want to be sure we aren't over doing it. I've no experience with the rail system in Germany, so I didn't know if it was really doable. Now to finalize hotels!

"I've no experience with the rail system in Germany"

A good place to start is the German Rail Query webpage for schedules and to see where you can go. German Rail has about 1000 stations in Bavaria; there aren't too many places you can't get to by rail.

This rail map of Bavaria might also help
