Is there a train to Mittenwald from Cinque Terre?

Trying to tie down some options and we may be heading to Mittenwald from Cinque Terre. I looked at Trentalia, but it comes up with no solution found. What's the closest or best place to take a train that we then could rent a car for the rest of our trip and use it to get to Mittenwald?

Thanks!

Do you want to get to Germany for the car to avoid taking it across borders?
There are five daily direct trains to Munich from Verona, departing approx 09, 11, 13, 15, 17.
A car from Innsbruck may be a good idea if you plan to return that way.

You'd have to split the trip into 2 tickets. One on Trenitalia from your Cinque Terre town to Verona. Then another one from Verona to Mittenwald or some other German destination on Deutsche Bahn. It will be a very long day with several train changes.

I'm not sure if Mittenwald would have rental cars, but you could train to Garmisch Partinkirchen and get one there. It's about a 20 minute drive from there to Mittenwald.

Is there A train to Mittenwald from Cinque Terre?

A single train, no. It will take a sucession of trains, several from Cinque Terre to Verona, then at least two from Verona to Mittenwald. You can book a ticket from Verona to Mittenwald from the German Rail website. It will be from Verona to Innsbruck by EuroCity (EC) train, then a regional train over the mountains via Seefeld to Mittenwald.

When you are looking, are you typing in Cinque Terra as you starting point? You cannot do that. You have the put the name of the actual town from where you will depart.

Regardless, that would be quite a long travel day. It would be helpful to understand your entire trip itinerary to best advise on a car vs. train.

Theresa,

For travel to different countries, use the Bahn.de website. Trenialia usually only shows trains which originate in Italy. The Bahn.de site covers most of Europe. Also, as someone else mentioned you'll need to use the name of the Cinque Terre town as your starting point, as the "Cinque Terre" is not a rail stop.

That's going to be a LONG trip to do in one day. Using Monterosso as the starting point, it looks like trips range from 10-12 hours, with 4-6 changes. One of the easiest trips is a departure from Monterosso at 07:05, arriving Mittenwald at 17:35 (time 10H:30M, 5 changes at La Spezia Centrale, Firenze Campo di Marte, Bolzano, Brennero and Innsbruck).

Is there any possibility of staying at an intermediate location for a night or two, to break the trip up?

You're planning a trip between two rural areas that aren't served by fast trains or very close airports, so expect a time-consuming journey. Ken's suggested route sounds as if it will be quite scenic, but do you want to spend ten hours on trains?
