Is my move wise enough?

I got note of maintenance work on the Cologne - Frankfurt high speed line on the day I have to fly home from Germany after the study abroad program ends. I have to use the line to get to the airport. I have a buffer day after the original day of departure, and booked a hotel room in Frankfurt for my final night.

The maintenance work will extend journey times of most ICE trains along the line by 1h40min. Originally my plan is to catch the ICE train which would arrive at Frankfurt Airport three hours before my flight departs, but with the hotel booking, I will be getting to Frankfurt the day before I fly home instead, reserving that whole day to travel to Frankfurt. I will then spend the last day in Frankfurt, arriving at the airport 3.5 hours before departure.

Is this a wise decision given that DB always delays?

Just to be clear; you want to know if it’s wise to arrive in Frankfurt a day before your flight back home? Why wouldn’t that be wise?

Why do you think that's wise? I think I can manage to stay in my original location or go back to Frankfurt as the hotel is refundable, so if you were me, would you arrive in Frankfurt a day before the flight?

I’m sorry but I don’t understand what it is you’re asking. Do you not wish to arrive in Frankfurt a day before your flight?

It is never unwise to spend your final night close to the airport.
If you have no interest in visiting Frankfurt, consider staying in Mainz - it is not much further from FRA airport and it is a charming city.

I like the plan that involves staying in Frankfurt the night before the flight. I would not want to arrive three hours before a flight on a long-distance train... even more so if the train is on a line where maintenance work is being done.

If flight leaves 8:30 pm it is optional. for a morning flight a hotel near FRA would be a good decision.

Wondering where the flight will head to. Spoken about "study abroad program" I thought USA is flight destination but flights from FRA to USA rarely depart at evening hours. Maybe re-check departure time.

btw: in my opinion flying in these times is not wisely at all - but different discussion.

given that DB always delays

Not true and unnecessarily offending and mentally poor.
