Is it necessary to book DB train Munich-Fussen in advance?

We are a group of five adults who need to travel from Munich HbF to Fussen in mid-April on a Wednesday morning. It is about a 3hr journey. Should we buy our tickets now from the US or wait until the day of or day before the train journey? We all have the DB app and accounts.

I'd feel a tad better booking and reserving seats now, but don't know if there are any benefits in doing so besides a bit less worrying on my part. Or are there benefits to waiting to book?

Thank you for any guidance.

Nope, it is a regional train and you can buy right up until just before departure. There are no reserved seats. Think LA commuter train.

Please note that the cheapest group ticket, a Bayern Ticket for 5 (€66 compared to €176.50 standard fare), is only valid from 9 am on weekdays, in your case for the 9:38 train RB 68 to Füssen at the earliest.
As mentioned above, seat reservations are not possible. RB 68 arrives at 9:21 from Füssen, so be on the platform at this time and occupy your seats.

If you want to travel as early as 8:38, you must buy an MVV group ticket for five people = zone M4 (€26.60 for 5) in addition to the Bayern Ticket. This covers you as far as Geltendorf, from where the Bayernticket is valid (departure 9:07). BTW, with this connection you have to change trains in Buchloe.

Gosh, thank you, everyone, so much for the super helpful info.

We are planning on the 9:38a train so we can avoid dealing with connections. Oh, and I misspoke. There will be six of us. The current plan is for each couple to purchase their own tickets on their own phones. But I am wondering if the Bayern ticket might be better. I haven't gone down the Bayern ticket rabbit hole yet, but I will now.

And, by the way, I hope the train is better than the LA one, but appreciate the description.

The normal fare one way is about 36 EUR, but you can buy 2 3-person Regio Allgau-Schwaben tickets for 92 EUR total. are you returning to Munich same day? If so, it free.

If you are taking the bus up to the Neuschwanstein, then you should get Bayern tickets instead for 98 EUR total and it will include the bus from the train station, and also if you need public transportation from your lodging to Munich Hbf, that is included if you leave after 9 am.

Get to the track in Munich (I am seeing Track 28 at the moment) about 15 minutes early and you can board as soon as they spot the train on the track and they open boarding, then you can be the first on board and grab seats together.
