This is one of the locations GI
Blues with Elvis was filmed.
Probably the main reason for visiting Idstein would be to see the many splendid examples of Fachwerk (half timbered) architecture.
Normally, your sleeping location and other plans would factor into the decision. There are so many Fachwerk towns that you can find them listed on a Fachwerkstraße website. So Idstein is not the only nice one, but it is one of the best.
Idstein is big enough to have many restaurant choices. We had a car when we went there. But threading through the modern city and walking from the distant parking was necessary.
Note: Exterior Fachwerk visits only.
it is to me
I like going to Idstein. The Killinger Haus where the TI is located, is magnificent. Get the keys here for the Hexen Turm if you feel like walking up inside of a medieval tower. They have some fun festivals here and the TI have a lot of guides if you want a tour. Make sure you go into the Union Church here. It will blow you away. Some day, we might get Rick to visit here so he can be amazed too.
If you are here, you might want to pop over to Limburg or Eppstein. Both have lots of beautiful half-timbered buildings and Eppstein has a cool castle ruin. Limburg has a beautiful cathedral too, which is certainly worth a visit if you are in this area.
I like it. The town is somewhat famous for their witch trials as well as the buildings.
Idstein did execute about 35 people as witches, but that doesn't even come close to what they did in Büdingen, where they executed 400 people! For anyone interested in this subject, both towns are a must, though Idstein is the only one to hold a Hexen Market. Held every 2nd year, it is a fun, medieval fest with an emphasis on witches.
