Interesting contrast in official newsletter

I just noticed an interesting dichotomy in today’s German National Tourist Office newsletter.

The articles in order are

Porcelain in Thuringia, Boutique Hotels in Hamburg, Sustainability in Deidesheim, Nature in Bad Hindelang, Love around Germany, and Magic by the River

I find it interesting that after a bit on sustainability and then one about nature in the wilds of Bavaria the final story encourages pollution- of the bridge and then by throwing the “love lock” keys into the river... other places are trying to convince people not to do that including Paris while Cologne and the GNTO are encouraging it....

Yes, amazing. Articles about pristine nature, followed by an article about throwing the keys into the river.
Why encourage people to throw anything into the river?

However, I was glad to see this pop up on the Rick Steves forum opening page, as Sunday is my day for reading online articles. I am enjoying all of these articles, especially the one about
Bad Hindelang, Bavaria.
"The region has also been awarded the seal “quality-tested for allergy sufferers” and is therefore perfect for those suffering from allergies."
I may have to give this a try, as an allergy sufferer.

Thanks, Nigel!

That’s disappointingly interesting. After Cologne has to dismantle and replace parts of the bridge, after it’s reached its maximum lock capacity, that love magic could be seen as cumbersome, inconvenient, and expensive. Or maybe tourist revenue from lock-leaving lovers is too good to pass up, and worth promoting?!?

If it’s about money, how about promoting buying Thuringian porcelain, the more the better, and then pledging your love by pitching it off the bridge in Cologne? Nature lovers can be assured that it will improve the pH of the water in the river, making the world better in every way. Or not ...

And the spoiler alert -- the whole newsletter refers to "once travel to Germany is available again"

Not uncommon to have different government agencies with different goals, not be on the same page.

I find it interesting that this is rated as "interesting" on a portal which can be seen by subject somehow dedicated to waste and pollution.

The footprint of travel is huge globally - especially air travel and cruises. Of course every piece matters - also a key in a river - but let us then start with the big emission blocks of travel.

You are right Mark. We pay our utilities company extra to get our electricity (and more) from Wyoming windmills and then we climb aboard a jet to fly to Germany. It is inconsistent. Poor, frail humans that we are, it is difficult to always be right.
