Can anyone give me the skinny on rail travel between Germany and Italy? I was thinking of taking an overnight train from Munich to Bologna. What type of seating is 1st class? Do they recline? I assume that would not be a sleeper compartment.
Your answer is here, from the ever knowledgeable Man in Seat 61: https://www.seat61.com/international-trains/trains-from-Munich.htm#Munich-Italy

Looks like 2nd class seating only, but they do have couchettes, and sleeping compartments.
Hmm interesting because when I search www.raileurope-world.com it shows an overnight ticket for 99 EUR. I'll check the other site though, as I'm not sure which is the best site to book from. According to Seat 61 it's the German one mentioned above.
Ok I think I've got the booking covered. Sorry this sounds very naive but I haven't done any overnight trains. What do you do with your baggage? Does it come with you in the compartment?
Never use RailEurope. It is a travel agency selling overpriced tickets.
Ok i've gotten the seating figured out, Seat 61 had some good photos. Thanks for the tip on Rail Europe.
Does anyone know the difference between the Sparpreis Europa Italien and Global Fare? Is it just the amount of Flexibility? I've tried to search the site but it's not obvious to me. Global fare is just slightly more expensive.
Re baggage in overnight trains. Same as in day trains, it stays with you. Overnight trains don't stop at stations much longer than day trains, so if you are getting of at an intermediate station, make sure you are ready with your luggage standing by the door before the train stops. There will be announcements, and the conductor may give you a personal warning 5-20 minutes before.
