Inspiration for itinerary in Germany - Top 10 monuments in Germany

In Germany we have a heritage day every year in September. The 2018 one is over: For all history buffs: here is a remarkable selection of monuments from public news provider DW.

They published that in German only first and my request for translated version was followed ;-)

MarkK,

Thanks for the list. I'm staying in Patersberg above St Goarshausen right now. I'm not far from the Niederwalddenkmal. I hope to see it in a few days.

Welcome to the community, by the way. Your early posts have been helpful ones.

Thanks for the article. The reason for Munich not having the Stolperstein has been a decade long argument between two Jewish groups, one of whom wants the stones and the other group who doesn't want like the fact that a memorial will be walked over and filled with dirt and dust.

The Stolperstein are actually in 22 countries, with over 70,000 installed.
They are for anyone who was killed by the Nazis, not just Jewish victims. Thus the fact that Munich, birth place of the Nazi movement, won't allow them is notable. If the Jewish community doesn't want them, that is fine, but what about all the people who were killed who weren't Jewish? Why don't they get a say in this? The Jehovah Witnesses, the Socialists, the Communists, the Homosexuals, the Union Leaders, the T-4 program victims, the Roma & Sinti, the Polish slave laborers, the nuns, the priests, and all the others who were killed?

Thanks for this list. Seeing that I should go to Worms

Out of ten, I have been to six...the Hermannsdenkmal near Detmold (1984), Beethoven in Bonn (1971), Niederwalddenkmal (first time 1977),

the Völkerschlacht (Battle of the Nations) first time 2009, Goethe and Schiller first time 2010, Holocaust Monument in Berlin.

I would suggest Porta Westfalica near Minden an der Weser, the Befreiungshalle in Kelheim, Deutsches Eck in Koblenz, and also the Kyffhäuser.

The Goethe and Schiller can be seen in SF too.

Oddly enough, Rick ignored Worms when he was doing his Luther film a couple of years ago.

For Holocaust Memorials, I would have thought the Holocaust Memorial Wall in Frankfurt would be on this list with the names of 12,000 Frankfurt Jews on it. Track 17 in Berlin, or the Memorial to the Roma and Sinti if they wanted to continue.

For Monument Day this year we visited Kronberg, with the lovely little Staufen Castle and its' original Yew Forest. The neighboring Johannes Kirche is a must see too if you are up in the Taunus.
We also toured the Justinus Chuche, one of the few remaining Carolingian Churches in Germany. It was consecrated in 850 and has always been used as a church.
Last year for Monument Day we toured the inside of St. Leonhards in Frankfurt (1219) which is still being restored but when it re-opens next year, perhaps Rick will come take a look at its't one of a kind hanging vault?

Great, what a feedback from all of you.

I like to add a "German" monument which is not located in Germany. It is the "Statue of Fridtjov" which is standing in Norway at beautiful Sognefjord. https://goo.gl/maps/UiAuypyCHy62

It was a present from emperor Wilhelm II to the nation of Norway as a symbol of friendship. He really loved Norway and regularly spent the summer months there, in old German called "Sommerfrische" (summer escape).

"...oversized monstrosities...." Admittedly, they are in regards to the 5 Prussian ones.....the Bismarck Denkmal in Hamburg, Völkerschlachtdenkmal (referred to above), Porta Westfalica, the Kyffhäuser, but a bit less so with the Niederwald Denkmal in Rüdesheim.

The Kaiser Wilhelm I monument on Deutsches Eck and that of Wilhelm I and Bismarck in Dortmund-Hohensyburg are more modest than the originals which were damaged by the war.
