Innsbruck to ... to Zurich

Hello, we are planning a roadtrip this May starting and ending in Zurich. We will have a car.

We will be in Innsbruck during the last few days of our trip and then driving back to Zurich. My husband wants to circle up through Germany and see Neuschwanstein on the way back. Our plan right now is to depart Innsbruck Thursday morning, drive up to Neuschwanstein, spend the night in Fussen and then head out from Fussen on Friday to catch our flight in Zurich (about a 3hr drive).

I'm not completely sold on this idea. It will be our last day/night in the EU before heading back to US... is Fussen/Neuschwanstein worth it? I've read mixed reviews on both. I'd like to consider some other options. If you had one last night between Innsbruck and Zurich, where would you go? We don't want to stay in Zurich.

We like driving and stopping to explore fun little towns, trying local foods, farmers markets, scenery, hikes, & history. Husband loves skiing and mountains.

As far as an overnight, we'd prefer a town with good restaurant options and a decent nightlife, not loud, but somewhere that doesn't close down at 7pm on a Thursday. We like to chat and have some wine before heading back to the room.

Neuschwanstein is worth it - especially when you also visit the neighboring castle of Hohenschwangau! When we visited we also had a car and stayed the night in the village of Hohenschwangau bypassing Fussen. For what it's worth Vaduz is a good stop for a couple of hours and isn't too far out of the way to/from Zurich.

I think you should buy your plane ticket first, then figure out your last day plan. Then you will know exactly when you have to be at the airport, considering also gassing up the car and turning it in. You might find that you need to leave earlier than you like to make it home at a reasonable time and price. I would add that if you are in Innsbruck for any length of time with a car, you can run up to Neuschwanstein any day you want.

I think I might want to stay a little closer to Zurich airport for your last night. Perhaps Romanshorn on the Bodensee (Lake Konstanz).

And you do know to get an Austrian vignette for the car, right?

Thank you, Sam! Yes, we were in Austria last year (drove down from Frankfurt). I realize our plan may have to alter a bit depending on the flight time, but either way, we will need to make our way back from Innsbruck to Zurich.

Note that we live 2.5 hours from our local airport so we're used to timing departures appropriately. I know being 2-3 hours away from the airport may seem unrealistic for some, but we're used to it.

I was actually looking at someplace on Lake Konstanz as an alternate option, so I appreciate the Romanshorn suggestion. There's so many neat places there, it's hard to pick one! What makes Romanshorn special for you?
