In search of beautiful neighborhoods

In planning for a future Germany trip (summer of 2019 perhaps?) I find myself enjoying looking at photos of nice elegant and beautiful residential neighborhoods with pre-war villas, nice parks etc. I actually lived in one such neighborhood, Freiburg's Wiehre district while going to school there years ago. I wouldn't plan my trip around seeing them, but it would be nice to incorporate some conventional sight seeing with visits to such places. I guess I have a repressed architect/city planner in me. Does anyone have recommendations of such places outside of obvious ones such as in Berlin or Munich?

Hi,

In Berlin that would depend on the type of neighborhood, its buildings you have in mind. For the wealthy, rich places I would suggest Zehlendorf, well known upper bourgeois neighborhoods. Charlottenburg is also good, it was traditionally and historically known as the richest town in Prussia. I suggest too Berlin-Spandau, very interesting, in terms of buildings and traditional architecture, the place was originally a suburb, like Charlottenburg, Köpenick, it has a different feel to it, ie, you feel that you are not in Berlin. Anyway, that's how I felt this time in Spandau.

A lot of the traditional old style architecture in Berlin is being torn down, such as those in Berlin-Karlshorst. I went back there last summer, had not seen the place since 1999, lots of Baustellen, same as the Berlin-Köpenick the area. I went back to Köpenick three times on this last trip checking out the place, Rathaus, etc, a massive Baustelle from the S-Bahn station to the famous Rathaus.

Frankfurt has some beautiful, old residential neighborhoods. Many of them built between 1850-1900. The Westend was and is the wealthiest of the old neighborhoods, and together with the Palmengarten you have very lovely spaces to enjoy. Dozens of consulates are located here as well as the homes of diplomats.
Part of Sachsenhausen has its' share of villas too. Mainly around the Schweitzer Strasse and behind the museum row located along the river. The Nordend has a lot of elegant turn of the century apt. buildings but not as grand as the Westend. Parks are everywhere in Frankfurt, and the city is about 45% green space and trees.

The Belgian Quarter in Cologne is lovely with lots of turn of the century buildings.

The Oberkassel area of Duesseldorf has some nice Jugendstil atmosphere.

Maybe Matildenhoehe in Darmstadt?

Hi,

If you are looking for towns with attractive architecture other the the big cities, is, Munich, Berlin, etc, then I would heartily recommend Lüneburg, Weimar, Eutin/Holstein, Celle, Meissen,...these towns, among others survived the war intact. Lovely places in terms of buildings. Minden an der Weser is another one, the Altstadt and Zentrum are well worth your time.

Thanks for replies and ideas everyone. Lubitsch the Leipzig neighborhood looks very nice, how wonderful that it survived WW2 and communist era urban planning. Also Wiesbaden is definitely on my list of places to see, which ties in nicely with the Frankfurt area as well.
