In Berlin for 21 days and want to meet residents for friendship only

Hello all waves. In my 59 years, I have traveled to almost every continent except Antarctica. I love to travel, as do most of you I'm sure.

My father's family is from Germany a very long time ago (I'm American), so I've wanted to go to Germany forever. I've always not gone for various reasons. Finally...finally...on February 20th I will be going to Berlin for 21 days. I have a friend in Dusseldorf I may go see, but beyond that it's a blank check.

Since I will be traveling alone (long story, please do not ask), one of my main priorities is to be friendly to residents. I have no nefarious motives except sharing a bier one night and that's it. Nothing more. I already know the obvious cross-cultural things to know and a few Berlin/German-specific things, but I'd like some tips so I can meet some nice Berliners and share a bier or lunch or dinner. That's it. I am sure Berliners are very much like we Americans but I try not to assume things. Thank you very much in advance!

Steve

I googled "meeting Berliners" and several things came up. Try that.

Steve, you don't say whether you speak German or not. Assuming you'd prefer English, try an English/International church. There are three that I'm aware of--Berlin International Community Church (we visited last June), the American Church in Berlin (oldest of the 3), and the Crossway International Church. There may be others. Have a great trip.

Hi Galen, I do speak English only but of course I am willing to learn and use some German. Those are good ideas, thank you!

I looked up "German-American Club Berlin", and found an active website with current activities. You might reach out to them.

Do you have contact with your father's family? Or do you do geneology? In my case, my mom's second cousin lives in Frankfurt. I knew him when we lived in Germany in the 1950-1960 period, so he was glad to see us. However, relatives, even 3rd cousins, might be interested in meeting you.

Great that you are finally going to Berlin and solo too. You intend to spend three weeks in Berlin....fantastic The first two times I went there in 1971 and '73 I went solo too. am very much glad I did too.

Recommended reading: My suggestion is the " Rough Guide Berlin. "

Luckily, I'll be back by May, this time only for a week.

Paul, almost all of my father's family is now dead. I have no idea who in the family is still alive in Germany. Thanks for the suggestion.

@ Steve...You're welcome. "The Rough Guide Berlin" has a good deal of useful, pertinent information, not merely on the usual tourist sights.

Consult too " The Rough Guide Germany" ie, its chapter on Berlin, can't recall if the two books are by the same author, no doubt very informative.

I would go the Tourist Information, which over 40 years ago went by the name " Fremdenverkehrsamt." Now the name is just "Tourist Information."

Two of them are very conveniently located, 1. on the ground floor of Berlin Hbf, 2. on the east side of the Brandenburg Gate just before Pariser Platz. No doubt you will be at Berlin Hbf and at the Brandenburg Gate.

3 weeks sounds like a lovely amount of time for a good visit. I bet you'll get to share plenty of biers with all sorts of nice folk.during your visit....

I've occasionally thought about printing up a card that says "I'm an American. Stop and have a conversation" or something like that. In some places, locals ask you where you are from. I usually kid them and say that I am from Australia. All in good fun...

You can meet people in Berlin in the same places you’d meet them in the states. Store, Park, bar, restaurant, church, etc. Just go to places frequented by locals and strike up a conversation. Many will know some English.
