OK you train fans, has anybody ridden on the volunteer run weekend service of the Ilztalbahn, around Passau, up north into the Bavarian Forest or east into CZ?
Thanks for drawing my attention to this train. I will be in Passau the second half of June and intend to try it out!
Yes, I have ridden it and hope to do so again this summer (unfortunately, they no longer use the historic railcar of the Passauer Eisenbahnfreunde, but a boring modern one of the Regentalbahn (aka Laenderbahn). You can even put together a trip to the Czech Republic if you transfer to the bus in Waldkirchen, destination "Haidmühle Grenze". You then have to walk a few hundred metres across the border in Haidmühle to the Nové Udolí train station. From there you can get to České Budějovice, for example. All a little time-consuming, but great fun!
NB. The DB information doesn't seem to know the bus from Waldkirchen to Haidmühle, but the regional BEG timetable information does: https://whitelabel.bahnland-bayern.de/app/trip?formik=destination%3Dde%253A09272%253A11614%26origin%3Dde%253A09272%253A4997%26realDesc%3Dfalse&lng=de&trip=multiModalitySelected%3Dpt
EDIT: Looking up the Ilztalbahn website I see that they are using a 628 rail bus from a small East German company this year, which has plenty of space for bicycles. That's good, then they won't be lying around between the seats.
