If you miss your IC train because of a late regional or s bahn train

Curious what would happen if you had a Deutschland ticket and then purchased a non flexible Ic ticket but missed the Ic connection because of a delayed s bahn or regional train delay and then proceeded to take the next available one. There would be no proof of the delay because wouldn’t your db Ic ticket just show that part of the trip, unlike a non Deutschland ticket holder whose ticket would show the whole itinerary and could use that as proof of why they missed their ic connection and was now taking a later option ?

There's no remedy for that. But you can prevent the problem. When you buy that non-flexible ticket, buy it NOT from your intended IC-train starting point, but from the station/stop on your regional train route that is located just prior to the IC-train starting point.

Just buy a flexible IC train ticket. If you buy a discounted ticket, you will not be protected, or you could go ahead and buy a discounted ticket that included the regional connection.

That's what I always do. However, you have to choose a station where the regional train actually stops (not all of them stop at every station) and therefore a connection can actually fail (the conductors on the ICE can check this).

Basically, it is important to note: Anyone traveling with a combination of DT and ICE has two different tickets, with the same consequences as when flying on different tickets.

Basically either book a flexpreis for the IC, or book the whole trip (including the regional train) on one ticket. The extra cost for the regional part is usually only a few euros, and you'll still be cheaper of than paying a flexpreis.

In fact, the so-called “Vor-” or “Nachlauf” with local trains before/after a long distance train is often disproportionately expensive because DB always charges the flex price for this. A current example: I am traveling from Augsburg Hbf to Frankfurt, 28.06. Fare from Augsburg Hbf (Sparpreis) €36.00; from Augsburg-Morellstr. (exactly 1.6 km away): €40.00, from my station (10km from the Hbf) €46.00. In this case, the saving for 2 people on the outward and return journey is €24.00 if we only book from/to A.-Morellstrasse and use our DT for the rest.
