If i only have one full day to visit a city or area in the Rhine Valley, what should it be

Hello all,

Long story short, I'm planning on visiting the Benelux region June 18th, for a few days (18th-22nd) , and was thinking of a doing a day excursion, probably from Brussels via train but not opposed to air travel either. I've been to Germany before but have only visited Frankfurt, and Heidelberg, so i was curious what might be a nice quick side trip.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thank you in advance.

Cologne (Koln in German). The cathedral is glorious. The Roman Museum is superb. And the miles of storefronts will make you look on every antiseptic mall you'll ever see with distaste.

Also, there are a series of small towns nearby that epitomize medieval Germany. I saw Bacharach and stayed a youth hostel housed in an authentic medieval castle. There are dozens of beautiful towns nearby as quaint as Bacharach.

I would vote for Cologne mainly because of the magnificent cathedral, but also because it's a fun city to walk around in with a lot to do. Aachen is lovely as well (and the cathedral itself has a lot of history) but the old city is a lot smaller and there is not as much to do there as Cologne.
